The boys at Performance Plate Boats have just finished a 5 metre tinnie and have added fish scale pattern to the hull with a small angle grinder. I thought it looks great so have posted a pic for your interest.
Cheers

Anyone know how they do that?
Sorry to disagree but IMO that looks awful!! And harder to clean.

I agree.. I think it looks absolutely horrible. Reminds me of dodgy $2 ornaments in 'cheap' asian nick knack shops.

i wouldn't use an angle grinder. I'd use a scotch brite.
Did anybody see "Trick my truck" when they basically did that (but in a cobweb sort of patern) and then painted it in a slightly tinted pearl transparent paint??
They painted a mural on afterwards.
It looked great and it would be so easy to clean.
That swirl finish is one you either love or love to hate.
I wouldn't mind it if there was a clear finish over it.

I guess you would have to see it first hand - to really get the effect......

Its probably a good way to hide a dodgy hull. I have only seen one boat with this finish. 6 mths later it must have been polished off as the boat was back to normal

Obviously you don't know that it is smooth as a baby bum and with clear coat it won't be harder to clean. Some people love it and some hate it just like some colours.

Its not actually ground into the metal if done properly its done lightly with a wire brush or something similar and all it does it create a circular pattern which can be more seen than felt. Maclay boats also have something similar from the factory

Jewelling as it is known is an old affair, check out a large number of fuel tankers driving around our roads.
It is a simple operation to acheive with scotchbrites on a flexi sanding head and a jig for location but very time consuming.
Several years ago I saw a boat with a fish shape soured into its sides using this method, looked good. The scouring head he used was about 40mm diameter though and suited the fish size well.
