Dan,
No, like most of them they will have security that will move you on, or the whole place will be fenced off, but you can forget the early mornings, drifting the seaway as thats when most ships arrive at ports. also probable three or four tugs buzzin around it'll be a shit fight.

I for one really hope it dont happen, well at least at wave break isl... I am for building a wall out the front of the mirage a kilometre out. it might also stop the beaches getting washed away.
Its only one mans dream and he's a loose cannon.

With all due respect Wayno, it is the Gold Coast.
Seems they are wanting to make it a stop over, attracting tourists.

Just think of all those tourists, get off the boat get a gut full and lose a packet at the casino, then they can forward journey to Brisbane where they can dock at
GrainCorp and be escorted by a forklift through the dust to a waiting taxi,, hey another Casino...

Great stuff Campbell, seems he has teared the Gold Coast a new one but Brisbane is still waiting, maybe not enough Casinos yet ......

Would be an absolute winner for the coast and Queensland. Sometimes progress is a good thing.

yes i agree it would be good but ive seen plans of what they can build straight out into the ocean, say out the front of the mirage and i would live with that. Just not in the seaway.

Count me in. I will be there. I'm not going to sit around and watch some dick build some monstrosity in one of our most beautiful fishing, snorkeling, diving and surfing spots in sth east queensland. Put it somewhere that won't disturb everyone from what they love doing in one of their favorite places. The broad water and the seaway is a shitfight on the best of days. Add a cruise liner and a tug and kiss everything goodbye.

Yes it would be good for the gold coast, get more people in and create more jobs. Gods knows we all need jobs, At the cost of what though
Where will the mantra of we need to grow bigger we need to develop more more more end. How about hey flatten straddie for a hotel resort for the guests aswell, and while we are at it wont the surf views be great there as well lets get rid of those sand dunes.
Money making corporations will want this one day as well, when do we say enough taken is enough taken

Now this is and interesting debate, just recently I was on a cruise ship and one of the stops was Broome. Now I have seen lots of fish caught off the Broome jetty but only in documentaries so thought it would be a great experience to just spend the day on the jetty chatting and watching the proceedings. Alas, this wasn't the case, a cruise ship was in so the jetty was closed not only to fishing but all pedestrian traffic.

That in my extremely humble opinion SUCKS as I would have liked to just walk it to see what it looked like. If this is what the spit is in for then it is for the Holy $ and nothing else and guess who owns the cruise ship that will be stopping there, most probably Carnival Lines and therefore the benefits will go OS again.

Dont forget the seaway and the broadwater will still be there but more people will have use of it.I also dont believe it will have any impact on fishing and recreation.

What about the effects of huge amounts of ongoing dredging in the seaway that would be required to recieve the big cruise liners to the detritment of fishing, diving, boating, surfing industry which basically center themselves around the seaway and wavebreak? It's an awesome dive spot, Hows this going to change that? Dredging a big seaway year in year out like that could cuase all sorts of destabilisation issues and changes in landform with negative impacts to local surf breaks in the area. And before you scoff at minority of surfing - well this generates 20 million each year to the coasts economy. These cruiseliners arnt even guaranteed to come here either and wont generate half that figure.

There will be disruption during the building phase for sure but the the benefits far outweigh the disruption.

Triple

And disruptions every time a ship comes in to dock and however long they stay for cause they will have an exclusion zone around them when docked, how many ships a year and how long they stay for? also every time they have to dredge the main channel. Ships that size in a channel like the spit would use side thrusters wouldn't they? What will that do to the fishing off the wall or the wall itself?

It's funny that all the previous reports (as far back as 98) showed that it would be an environmental disaster and not economically viable (and that's when the Aussie dollar wasn't as high) and an overwhelming majority said no, but suddenly 1.7mil is spent on review and a few quiet meetings they say there is no problem and everyone wants it?

Grummel,
Do you even go to the seaway or the spit?
Do you know what dredging is?
Will you benefit from the cruise terminal being there?
What effects are going to come of the exclusion zone and the 2 odd hours no one is allowed through the seaway when a cruise ship is going to coming in or leaving?

If you don't go there and don't use it for everything it has to offer right now then don't bother putting your opinion up.

Dredging is when they make a channel deeper by sucking up all the sand/mud and throwing it somewhere else. (what effects will this have. Take a look at the dredging in Gladstone and how that disturbed the marine ecosystem. Where does all the sand go. It goes out to sea which travels north off the coast and will end up on straddie or filling in jumpingpin. What about the marine life this will disturb). This will happen a couple of times a year.

Unless you plan on working at the terminal you yourself will probably not see any huge benefits. The money will go to a useless Gold Coast government that doesn't know what to spend their money on and to a guy that struggles to even say his ABC's yet alone talk a proper sentence. Not that being unable to speak English properly is his fault but he can't show any "hard data" that he acclaimed he has. Won't say who the experts are and probably paid them to write some bulls$&t report.
There will be very little economic gain to the state but to an overseas company that docks here. Yes some tourist might go see some shops, go on some rides at sea world, movie world, dreamworld etc. and that is great for the everyday shop owner and attraction owner. But where is our money for losing something we love.

So what happens if the weather turns bad and there is a ship coming in. You have to stay there and pray that your boat doesnt get swamped? What about local trawler operators that leave on dawn and come back at dusk. Just like a lot of charter operators too. They will lose out as well or have to change their ways of operating and hours.
I don't think you will be able to cross to sth straddie on a board anymore for a surf. Won't be able to sit in the seaway and fish anymore.(probably wont be any fish there anyway after all the dredging).

Do you really think that the gold coast needs more tourists. I find it hard enough to get around there as it is. When do you say enough is enough?

Hear hear Shauno! Well said.

I would bet that anyone who thinks its a good idea hasn't boated, fished, snorkelled, surfed or swum in that area.

Cheers mate. Im all for creating jobs and improving Australia's economic value. But they can't gain money from something that isn't theirs. I'm a big believer in if we don't gain from it why have it.

The seaway would more likely look like Brisbane river after all this was done. Why not look into an offshore terminal with transport to and from the mainland?

I live at runaway bay and have a black watch and am a active member vof spgsfc and use the seaway and broadwater several times a month.I also gain some of my income from business done around the gold coast. For me the more jobs and tourists the better. Also i am sure the terminal can be built and ships can come and go and improve our boating lifestyle .OH and by the way what do you do on the broadwater and seaway shauno555.
