Hey guys,

I fitted my new anchor winch on Thursday (see pics) and im very very happy. I still need to do some tidying up, ie sand back where the chips are and then i am fitting a custom made stainless steel collar to cover the exposed fibreglass before covering with the thick black marine tape.

As you can see the anchor hangs a fair distance over the front of the bow (i know i dont have the right anchor sprit, its coming)

What i intend on doing is building a bowsprit, now this is where i would like your input.

My thoughts are to build a frame from steel, bolting it down where the current anchor sprit bolts too then feeding it through inside of the hole i created and secure it there also. I would have a support piece fitted under the flat section to aid with strength, then have the side of the sprit made out of marine ply and secure it to the steel frame before paying a professional to fibreglass the whole lot.

Thoughts?

I have had quotes to have one made and they are around $1000!! i could make the frame for less than a $100 then pay maybe another $200 - $300 for a pro to fibreglass and paint.

Has anyone else made one or have any other suggestions?

I have some other pics of the inside to show where i could secure the steel frame too, ill upload them later

So no one has any ideas or has made one themselves?

Would it not be easier to buy a stainless steel sprit ready to go, similar to the one you have.
Using steel ( will rust) and timber (will rot ) if any moisture gets at it. I looked on the net a while back and bought one similar to yours and it works well after a little modifiing.
It just sounds like a lot of work and mucking about to make one.
Cheers.
PS I started to make one out of 50 x 50 x 3mm aluminium but got the stitch. It was easier to buy ready to go.

Im not sure where i can buy a "pre-made one" If your referring to the metal sprit i already have the correct one to suit the SARCA will have the same issue. If you look closely at the photo's you will see that the style line of the boat goes up sharply which stops the anchor from going all the way in. I need the bowsprit to lengthen the front to allow the anchor to fit fully.

Reluctantly the first reaction this GOM had was maybe consider a bigger boat to suit the anchor or maybe go with a smaller anchor!

Where in SA do you take your rig that you need an anchor of that size? How are you also going to use a reef anchor?

You probably have a good chance of doing damage retrieving the anchor shown. Its not hard to imagine a quote of $1k to engineer something to possibly cope with the likely stresses.

Sorry to be a worry wort but you did seek thoughts!

Hope it works out for you some how.

Cheers

The anchor is the size SARCA recommended for my boat. No matter which anchor style i went for i think i would have had the same issue. I fish yorke peninsular, furthest drop is about 30km but mainly within 10 - 15km so usual depth 10 - 15mtrs of sandy rocky bottom. I used to use a reef pick but found it would drift to much in the sandy bottoms. Ill keep looking and speak with a few boat places to see what they recommdnd

Have you got a photo of how your winch is mounted and what it looks like from the inside / hatch?

Don't go near the ply steel and glass idea. It will end up a disaster long term.

To get the cost down make up a template in cardboard or ply and then get it manufactured - so much of the cost is in the design and template so if you do that all you have is cut and weld to pay for. As you do the template you will resolve how to secure it and all the other issues. It needs a significant set up on bows like that with 10kg so far out leveraged to ensure it is strong enough and you also have a option if the winch doesn't work.

Look for similar boats on boats for sale websites and find someones photo who has already solved the issue and consider using their design with any improvements you can add. .

You need to add something to tie the rope off to if the anchor gets stuck and you have to motor off. I'm also wondering why you didn't go through the hatch like I did with my sig.

As you can see from the first two the angle over the bow is quite steep, i couldnt have the chain running into my hatch

That's an awkward shape to work with from the word go. I reckon your best bet would be to track down a boat builder or similar and somebody that works with stainless steel. Take the boat to them and get something like JJ's made up and moulded to the bow. Any other way could look a bit how's ya mother. Just looking at your boat you would want it to look smick. Cost wise, looks and works great or looks pathetic and not all that serviceable.
Cheers.

I think the design of your bowsprit need to get that big anchor a lot closer to the boat and possibly angled down a bit with your hole closer up to the winch and your existing hole would be covered. Wherever teh chain is above FG I'd have it as a stainless plate under it as the FG will always get damaged and the estainless will spread the load.

Just had a quick look on boatpoint to see how others have done it as Haines being curvy and steep make it bloody hard. Haines suck for not having a decent solution off the shelf. and as it takes such a beating I would want it done right. Have a look and see how others have had a go.

Even this bloke doesn't leave the anchor in by the looks of it.
