In the middle of a rebuild of my yamaha 150, and has me considering options. One being to scrap the old motor and sell the parts, and then buy another motor. Boat is an old 21ft Swiftcraft. So the question, what would be the minimum size and max size motor you would strap on the back of a 21ft?

I am thinking that a newer 140 would be more powerful than my old 1992 150, but would you go less than 150?

Ideal I am thinking about a 175.

Is there a plate stating max HP? that will at least give you a start on how far you can go up! how did the boat float at rest with the old 150 and how did it perform?

No plate. It is an old boat.

Went pretty well with teh 150, and did not sag in the arse when at rest. A bit more weight will not be an issue.

the yammi 150 2 stroke were always a strong motor and being a 2 stroke pulled well at mid range so if you want similar peformance in midrange you might be a bit dissappointed going down in HP depending on just how often you enjoyed opening it up with the 150 on. You can prop a smaller motor but gets to a point where they work their bums off to get midrange and never give good top end. The larger HP will also cope a lot better on the times you have fat mates and a whole lot of gear on board without changing props and running slower.

We all have our own opinions on what we think is suitable as some of us love to open it up on those few glassy days , and not so glassy days when the back is feeling up to it.

Just what speed and cruise whee you getting and could you cope with a slower cruise?

A 2012 Hp is the same size as a 1992 Hp prior to 1984 they were smaller Hp's. A new 150hp may perform better purely because its newer but the power is measured the same way.

I don't generally go over 4250 rpm which is about 47 kph, so it sounds like I could go to a 140 if a really good deal came up, but I am better off with either the same or maybe a 175. Even a 200 as weight is not an issue. Thanks.

Hey Cheech

Have a look at the "Parts" forum on "The Hull Truth", there are often outboards advertised there used for very good prices, and often twins, for what you'd a for one used motor here. Easy to import, and have a spare to keep for parts....

Heres a single Yammy F150 4 stroke as an example: http://www.thehulltruth.com/parts-forum/438793-2004-yamaha-f150-4-stroke.html

Just a thought.

Cheers

I was thinking of upgrading my Opti 150 to a new Merc 150 fourstroke. My Opti could be an option Cheech....

I had wondered about second hand from the states. Any idea what shipping would be? I would guess maybe a grand.

John, an Opti would be nice, but probably out of my price bracket.

Well, glad I put this thread up. I am now the 'soon to be' owner of an Opti 150 thanks to John_R. Just in time for 1770 M&G.
