View Full Version : Non-genuine boat sale enquiries

Guys,

Has anyone heard of a similar enquiry to the below email? I assume the hit came from my BoatSales ad, however the story sounds a bit too far fetched for my liking... The company/project checks out however personally I would not buy a boat sight unseen so I find this person's story hard to believe.

I can't manage to suss out their IP to confirm their location as they are using a gmail address.

Thoughts?

Subject: Re: Boat

Thanks for mailing back.I am away at sea at the moment,i work with New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) and we are presently offshore in New Zealand Taranaki Basin on kapo project. We do not have access to phone at the moment, its 15days off and 15days on,which is why I contacted you with internet messaging facility. I am buying this for my for my holiday, and i want it to be delivered before my arrival in NT . However, does it have any history I should be aware of? and why are you selling if you don't mind my asking and I will really appreciate if you can email more info and if possible more photos. I am already in talks with the courier that will handle the pick-up and delivery to my family .

As regards the payment, I can pay you through direct bank deposit, using ppal instant bank wire transfer service, I will need your bank details. If you are not comfortable with that, you can set up a paypal account proper at www.paypal.com.au (http://www.paypal.com.au/) and I will make the payment through paypal, this way, all I will need is your paypal email address,so i can proceed with the payment and contact the courier agent who will come to pick it up and deliver it in my place.

Regards,
Daive.

Cheers
Leon

Yep - common scam. Expect to get a few more similar enquiries if you advertise on boatsales.com.au...

Do not click the links as it generally leads to fake ebay sites and can also change you favourites site for ebay to a false on and then when you log on they get userrname and password or worse your paypal.

Just be a specially careful clicking on suspect links..... Even though it says 'www.paypal.com' it can direct you to somewhere else that looks like PayPal. Eg www.paypal1.com.ru or even www.somewherelse.com.gb

The words you see in the highlighted link can in fact bear no relation at all to the actual site it hyperlinks to. Once on their site you type in your username an password thinking your on PayPal and now they own you.

Always safer to go to places like that by using your own navigation links rather than the supplied one.

I had no intention of clicking on the PayPal link and I suspect it is not legitimate (paypal-australia.com.au). I will have some fun with them.

For the fellow that asked, I'm selling a 4.65m Savage Scorpion with an '06 Honda BF50. http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/classifieds.php?do=viewitem&itemid=890
Please buy it, it is a great boat and I need to pay off my new one :)

I don't know either, but let me know if a bulk subscription service for the aforementioned websites exists and I will gladly sign this person up!

They are getting a little bit more clever these days but to an unsususpecting person that would be half believeable. Ask him to give you a call on the 15 days he has off lol jeez.::)

I'm sick of these buggers. Ask for a deposit to be wired to you via western union. That will F*** em up!

Or ask for a shipping address, add on $10K for shipping and direct deposit. Nothing for them to do, but to cough up the money. Make it real easy for them.

i believe these people use stolen credit cards to deposit the payement via paypal. once in, paypal clears it ok, you then deliver the goods, then not much later the bank catches up with you and takes their money back, so you end up with nothing.
the common thread is the buyer working offshore and can't get to check it out, and wants you to freight it on

The whole idea of this con is to get you to pay the courier fee for the pickup.

They do this by creating a false paypal account pretending to put the full amount for the boat in PLUS the courier fee then get you to pay for the courier fee off via western union.

They're not after your boat, they're after a few grand for the courier fee.

Nothing but dodge when a prospective buyer is happy to cough up the asking price with no negotiations.
