Given the predicted 8m swell and 2.00m spring high tide tonight, brace yourselves for some serious beach erosion tonight. Pretty sure we'll be kissing our beach goodbye down here.
Last time this happened from memory was 6-7 years ago, however although the peak of the swell arrived on one of the highest tides of the year (full moon in June, same as now coincidently) it was smaller at 5mtres.
Only saving grace this time around is the swell diection, from the S, rather than the ENE as it was last time.
Should be a lot of shoals and bombies showing on this afternoon's low tide!
Damage to the dunes last time took many many months to repair; old mate and I guestimated at least 2 metres depth of sand had been stripped from the entire width of the beach, including the surf zone.
I recall being on the dunes at the peak of that high tide and watching banksias and casaurinas toppling into the waves as the dunes were washed from under them; powerful stuff. Will probably go and watch again tonight if it's not raining; an awesome and scarey display of the power of the ocean.
