Hi all.

Have a 3.5 mt quintrex explorer was running a 5 hp suzuki 85 model on the back.
Decided to up grade the motor .
Looking at a 9.9 hp four stroke or a 15 hp 2 stroke .
What motor would people recommend.
I usualy do saltwater fishing but have been hitting the dams alot latley to try something different.

15hp 2stroke, then get an electric for the stealthy stuff. 9.9 will be left wanting on a boat that size.

x 2,maybe even a 20hp,definately want to have a bit much power, instead of not enough.

Yep, I am with the others. Its always good to have the more power there even if it is not used or needed all the time.

G'day

What's it rated to?

I have a 9.9 on a 3.7...... It's only rated to a 10. It's enough, but more would always be nice.

15 will surely suffice (and I dare say may be max. for a hull that size?)

Hi all .
Thanks for the advive.
The boat is rated to 15hp max.
Was thinking about putting a 2 stroke 9.9 on the back but arfter talking to some dealers
they recomended 15hp 2 stroke because there around the same weight and around the same price. yamaha dealer quoted $200 more for the 15hp.
Have a bow mont electric on the front so I think 2 stroke 15 would be the way to go I can use the electric on dams that are four stroke only.

Thanks for the help Nathan.

9.9 and 15 are the same motor/weight across most brands. If the weight isn't an issue then its a 15 all day.If weight is an issue, tohatsu do an 18 h.p. based on the 9.9/15 h.p. motor, and a 9.8 h.p. based on the 6/8 h.p. motor. Those two give about the best power to weight in the class you are looking at. Also bear in mind though that places like Lenthalls Dam won't let you in with old school 2 strokes like the two I just mentioned.

Go a Mercury 15hp super aka Tohatsu 18hp..

Will run you at 40kph..

DO NOT go a tohatsu 18hp i had one on a 3.75m allycraft and it was well over powered and scary with 1 person on board at full throttle with 3 adults onboard it went faster than a 20hp 1975 model with 1 person on board its that powerful

i would recommend a 9.9hp four stroke for a 3.5m tinny they are considerably smaller than the 3.75 in length and width

a mate has an 18hp tohatsu on the back of his 3.75 quintrex dart and it honks along even with 2 of us (not small blokes either) and all our crabbing/fishing gear. it can be scary/fun with one but its no probs and better to have the oomph there if we want it. awesome little motor with bugger all fumes and trolls along nice and smooth too and its about 4yrs old now and only had the impeller changed, no plugs or anything.

cheers ryan
