Tune in to understand VHF marine radio

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has produced two new videos that provide recreational boaters with up to date information about using VHF marine radios.

The first video (http://engage.acma.gov.au/video/marine-vhf-radio-part-1/) shows recreational boaters the importance of operating VHF marine radio correctly. It includes a re-enactment of an actual rescue by the NSW Office of Boating Safety and Maritime Affairs and Marine Rescue NSW.

The second video (http://engage.acma.gov.au/video/marine-vhf-part-2-checking-the-weather-before-you-go-out-on-the-water/), produced in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology, is about how and why boaters should always check the weather on their VHF marine radio before setting sail and while at sea.

Both are lively and engaging, shot in and around Sydney Harbour, and will appeal to both individual boaters and marine-related organisations. They are part of a wider ACMA communications campaign to inform recreational boaters about the correct use of VHF marine radio.

The ACMA has also produced stickers (http://www.acma.gov.au/webwr/_assets/main/lib310615/vhf_marine_radio-sticker.pdf) reminding boaters of the purpose of each VHF channel and information cards (http://www.acma.gov.au/webwr/_assets/main/lib310615/vhf_marine-postcard.pdf) which reinforce the importance of calling on Channel 16 and then switching to a working channel. The information card also reminds boaters to always listen on Channel 16 when not using the radio.

More information about VHF marine radio (http://www.acma.gov.au/vhfmarine), including links to other organisations such as the Bureau of Meteorology, is available from www.acma.gov.au (http://www.acma.gov.au/).

Thanks Phill,

That's well worth a watch and everyone who goes boating should watch the first clip..
Its good to get a refresher of what you should say over the radio.

Cheers
Brett
PS. That clip should stay at the top of the Boating and Electronics threads as a reminder to NEW and OLD boaties..

The ACMA sees the need for some education? Long overdue.
