Got home this arvo from a couple of days in the Whitsundays. When I say this area is pretty, I mean the following:
Its a pretty long way to tow a 2 plus tonne trailerboat
The sun gets pretty hot.
The tides can be pretty big.
There's still some pretty good Trout around the islands.
Ok, the scenery is pretty awesome!
Got into town on Saturday arvo a bit later than I would have liked. Put the boat in at Shute only to find the batteries were dead :( Luckily Ash from Seafever Sportfish was just back from a charter and he offered up the (marine) battery out of his own car to get us going. At this point, it looked like tomorrow was going to be spent around the islands (rather than outwide like planned) so we very (!!!) Gratefully grabbed his battery and the mighty Suzuki roared into life about 830pm. Luckily its only a 10 minute run over to Daydream Is resort, where we stayed Saturday and Sunday.
After a hearty breakfast at the buffet, we hit the water and found a solid 15 kt SE blowing in the passage. Combined with full moon tidal flow, made for challenging conditions. We were predominately chasing Gts on poppers and we hit several points with only 1 failed swipe at Bird Is (up near Hayman). We ventured up to Langford reef and again, it looked ideal (for GTs) but nothing. Needing a break, we anchored up on the dropoff of the fringing reef and Jas fished baits whilst I played around with plastics.
My second throw with a Slick Rig got absolutely nailed and up came a 3kg Trout- Cool! We added another 3 really nice Trout to the box including 1 that would go 5kg. A cracking fish around the islands I reckon. We also got a handful of baby Spaniards too small to keep and we both got dusted a couple of times, with Trout the suspected culprits. A really nice session.
Dam, it was nice getting back to Daydream, having a hot shower and grabbing a juicy steak from the Fish Bowl Cafe. This is how to overnite! Daydream is totally underated. Its a fantastic resort and I'm coming back with the family in tow for sure.
I had to fly home today so we only had time for a bit more (unsuccessful) GT chasing around Cid island. I'm storing the boat at the Boatel (trailerboat storage in Airlie) so we washed her up there and raced to the airport. Thanks Jas for driving the ute home :)
My thanks again to Ash from Seafever, for going waaay beyond the call of duty by offering up his battery and lining up the accomodation on Daydream.
Got a couple of trips planned up there in the coming months. Stay tuned for more reports (hopefully more fishing next time!) :o
