View Full Version : One for the Yamaha F70 owners
Hi Ausfishers & particularly those that own the awesome Yamaha F70.
I'm in the throes of looking for a good all round efficient prop for my Seajay 5.0m barra masta / F70 combo .... always fun ::)
Out of curiosity I'm wondering what props are others running on their boats - :)
So what info would be useful is Prop diameter / Pitch / Brand / Material - RPMs & Speed ..... .then finally the make and model of boat - Any other useful information.
This could be a helpful thread for others as well
Looking forward to hearing everyones experiences & thoughts......

G'day
Nagg, what's your current engine height and engine numbers? (prop, WOT RPM, WOT speed etc)

Nagg,
Have a look at the yamaha site for their test reports, they have 3 i think with different boats with the F70 including a Seajay Haven Sport 4.85
Mine is
Cruisecraft 485 about 1000kg on water
White K Series Yamaha Prop
13 1/2 x 15"
Getting 5800 rpm ( 54-55 klm) on the Bay (reasonable conditions) loaded up with couple of eskies, 2 POB etc
Came originally with a 17' pitch but slow off the plane with 3 people POB and only got to about 5300 rpm, the 15" pitch is definately better but i feel it could still go down to a 14"
Am thinking about getting another prop, either
Solas 14" or
K Series 13 5/8 x 14" ( 6E5-45958-00-EL) prop as that was the prop Yamaha ended up with when they tested the CC 485 with the F70a

Excuse my ignorance ::) - Where do you measure the height from ? Are you talking which hole ? - if so 2nd
Other than that I'm getting about 48kmph (WOT 6300rpm) out of a 13 5/8" x 13" K Series prop
I've also got a 14 x 11 K Series for heavy loads ..... Cant remember the RPMs but only got 37kmph... with good holeshot

Sounds like the 13 5/8 x 15 would suit you better Chris.........on an alloy boat it should swing that no worries,
14x11 pitch is way too small...........swap it with your dealer....that prop will never be usefull to you unless you decided to carry an extra 1000kg of gear with you.

Hi Dan .... the 14 x 11 was used for carrying big weights on our recent camping trip to Hinchinbrook Is
I'm still trying to get my head around why props (13" dia) that are suited to the F60 are being swung off a higher output & higher geared F70:-?

Some power heads ccs for the 60-70hp just exta revs for the 70hp but higher geared 2.33 @6300 is 2703 prop, so the 60hp 1.85 gear @6000 is 3243 prop rotations 13in would be better for a ligher boat and the 70hp 13in for a heavyer boat , its just the 70hp would just cruise better thats how i see it Chris .

Different top end on those engines, same block as 50/60 but very different valving and cam arrangement.

Gday Chris,
I think you might be getting confused with the FT60 and the F60. The FT60 is the High Thrust engine and it runs the same gearcase as the 70 but the standard F60 runs the much smaller (IIRC the F50/F60 run the smaller 11 1/4ish props and the F70 runs the much much larger 13 1/2ish props). As far as I am aware the FT60 is for larger slower craft where the high thrust but perhaps lower speed is required off the FT60 as opposed to the F60.
Certainly in my case going form the F50 to the F70 there is plenty more torque evident and it really does need the bigger prop with its greatly increased HP.
I have a pretty light for the motor 4.55 Seajay and I run the 14"SS Solas 3 blader, getting around 6100 2 up with a standard fishing load for about 30ish knots, the 15" yamaha ally K series props gets me about the same revs and the same speed which suggests to me despite working reasonably well it slips quite a bit... THis has also been mentioned to me by SOLAS and a few other people hence dropping the inch in pitch when going to the stainless. My engine is on the lowest hole (highest setting) too which probably means my prop does have a higher propensity to slip, though I have to say if I could go a lower hole and get the motor higher I definitely would, I dont get ventilation when it is trimmed right even in tightish turns. But certainly in chop the SS does hold on much better than the K series prop.
If I were you I would possibly try the 13" SOLAS SS, it may work or you may be still slightly over propped given my experience with the K Series slipping, though I must say if I had my time again I would probably just stick with the cheap K series as I think it is probably 85% as good as the SS prop but much much cheaper. I did just come back from a fishing trip where I had 4 blokes on board with plenty of gear and the boat planed easily and was still quite responisve with the SS prop I have, a massive difference from a similar load with the F50 that struggled enormously.
I have to say though, everyone I have spoken to have said the F70 is THE hardest engine to prop out there, and I am still not 100% happy but its pretty damn good.
Not sure how you go with bow lift but if you feel you aren't getting enough I have a 14" SS yamaha performance series prop here you are welcome to try, I seriously doubt it is the prop for you but if you feel like adding it to the mix let me know. It is now a genuine spare and unless I burn a few props and I am a long way away from a dealer it wont be going back on my motor again. Certainly it has a significant cup on it so the motor can be damn high and still not have any ventilation issues.

4.6m custom plate boat about 500kg and only 6deg deadrise
Yamaha S/S 13.5" x 16" at 5900rpm getting up to 31knts

Yeh ...... I noticed that I'm running a 11"x 13 5/8 prop on the F60 ...... I had it in my mind it was a 13 " Diameter
