Don't know anything about the quality. You could also look at places selling rock climbing stuff but be prepared to cough up some serious dough. I've seen the name Blue Water Titan come up before.

Minimum break on 8mm nylon 3 strand is just over 1000kg.........it would also be easy to find and cheaper to buy.........it also has streach unlike pe ropes.

It also had a huge breaking strain of 3 ton plus, i used it as anchor rope on a stress free winch which i can give a huge recommendation to anyone buying a deck winch from. Another australian made quality product.
Cheers jim

hey I know you guys are not intending to break an anchor rope any time soon and this stuff is incredibly strong but do you think it wise to use as an anchor rope. I thought about it myself a while back until I read on the specs that it floats. This aspect of using it bothers me from the possibility of snapping or having a rope chafe or cut through on or near the surface while anchored and losing the cut end into the drink, would it remain suspended in the water to foul anything that swims or even motors past it??
If it does indeed float then it may be recoverable if it can be found by the owner, If it can't be found does it become a real threat to passing boats and wild life??
It just happened to me a few months back where my new boat's bowsprit had the usual sharp edges I forgot to remove and the first anchor retreival saw the nylon rope cut through and by the time I got organised it was gone to the bottom and I couldn't find it, not very happy but at least it went to the bottom. Bit worried about Dyneema, but I haven't done any test either to see what it does.

Any thoughts

Spectra has no stretch. Do you really use it for anchor rope? The ride at anchor would be harsh and i reckon the pick would pull free more often.

I am not so sure. I think the "softness" of the ride at anchor is not rope stretch.

It's the change in the quaternary (?) curve because of different tension. Also its the resistance to dragging the new shaped curved rope through the water to its new position. Lastly it's the heaving up a bit of the last section (hopefully not all the way to the anchor) of the chain.

So I don't reckon non stretch verses stretch would be noticeable with all that going on.

Hey Ben, Core Offshore will sell 6mm for $429.00 for 200m , $214.50 for 100m and by the meter for Finga it is $2.57. It is rated to 1700kg. If you are interested give Donna a call on 0732777400. I didn't find out about the 8mm.

I don't think the lack of stretch is an issue, so long as you put enough rode out for the water depth. My current and last boat have all chain, not much stretch there! :)

Aw crap! Here's me thinking about the various factors and writing a long blurb.... and forgetting about all chain anchors. Good point.

What you wrote is correct Walrus, and is the very reason you put more rode out in rough conditions. All the movement is taken up in the rode changing angles and the pick shouldn't move.

Myles

Yeah but your chain example more simply proves that stretch isn't the important factor. I wish I'd thought of it.

I am still more concerned about the stuff floating around out there if lost OB, but must be on my own in that regard

No I agree with you.... A lost anchor line should sink for the benefit of all. I don't want sun damaged polymer portions flaking off into fish gullets. Or even worse.... Rope wrapped round my prop.
