View Full Version : Do you giggle like an idiot - aka iFish - when you are fishing?

When I go out fishing, rare these days due winds, weather etc, I nonetheless treat it as a fairly serious thing, love the thrill of the bite and the catch but there is no way I revert to a babbling, giggling idiot like the host of iFish who follows in the footsteps of the notorious Rex Hunt who drove me mad with his babbling idiocy.

Yeh, yeh, I know his show was great but without him it would have been brilliant! I watched it with the sound off and captions ON when possible and the high quality of his show was excellent when viewed that way.

Likewise iFish obviously has a lot of money thrown at it as there are no complaints about the content but do you carry on like a ten year old kid when you jag a fish?

I know the Host can't do the whole hour as a deaf mute but if his antics are representative of how we rec fishermen behave, I would shrink away in shame! Massive ego is a prerequisite of being a show host but look at ET who does an admirably professional job on his show and makes it a pleasure to watch as he aims it at adults in a thoroughly professional way!

All the failed boating and fishing shows in the past have invariably had a clown for a host - remember Fishing WA? - ET kills them all as he treats us like mature adults who love our fishing, get excited at the right time and doesn't behave like a first class goose throuhout!

I'm dun!

Depends.
If I have something to be giggling about then I'll giggle and go on like a little 10 year old school boy looking at a 40 year old playboy.
But usually I'm just sitting back enjoying the company, tranquillity and the fight of the fish that's attached itself on my hook (if I'm not partaking on the ingestion of food or drink_.

There's an old saying:
You don't stop laughing because you grow old.
You grow old because you stop laughing

I'm never one to criticize someone for having a bit of personality. I think its great to see someone who shows genuine passion and enthusiasm for what they do. I don't particularly like the show but I respect Paul for what he does for the fishing community and especially the kids. Have a watch of Adventure Bound on ch31 and ###### (183) I think it will be right up your ally.

I hear that "ET" nearly lost his role/show with Discovery,,, he has been "sent" to New Zealand for awhile,,,, probably until some of the "dust" settles and his sponsors regroup

Paul Worstelings current "ego trip" is that the iFish team are producing 10 new episodes throughout 2012,,,, which may make the Saturday morning reruns of his show a bit more tolerable,,, BUT when you compare 10 shows with the likes of Mark Berg,,, who is doing over 30 this year,,, and hosts a far greater show IMO,,, pffft to PW

When I'm out on the boat its one of the few tiimes when I do laugh histerically, normally to over up my supidity for dropping a fish I knew I shouldn't have or losing a brand new T-curve over the side....its either laugh histercially or burst out crying.....

Yeah - I struggle with Worstling's over-acting as well. I did not mind Rex's excesses but Worstling seems to have copied Rex and then added some.

Lee Rayner, Worstling's ex-TV hosting partner and Hunt's son-in-law is much more enjoyable to watch, imho.

I cannot watch Scott Hillier for similar reasons.

Is that the same as being "sent to Coventry"? ::)

.

I think so,,,, I do know he was meant to be in Northern Territory early next month,,,, but a 2-3 week stint in NZ,, then home for a few days,,,, mmmmm NT is cancelled

But IMO,,, (and I'll probably get shot down here,,, but so be it),,, what other show "pulls" an average guy/gal from the street and takes them away for a weeks fishing,,, I wonder how many members here have been nominated (or HAVE nominated) to be the lucky one,,, and you get to win prizes on top if your lucky enough,,,, ON TOP OF THAT ,,, Mark is now prowling the east coast (not Qld tho) ,,, picking a lucky person who turns up at a nominated venue and off they go for the day fishing !!!

Mrs Choppa put my name in the barrel ages ago,,,, and I have actually met MB a few years back,,,,, true legend,,, great bloke,,, should make a statue of him,, (Im sucking up here in case he reads this)

No, not a giggler,

I guess that's why I like Robson Green on Extreme Fishing.........

he looses a fish & has no trouble cussing in front of the camera.
(a bit like me when I do a good one)

I don't know about giggling like an idiot - but there are certainly a few whoops and yells - especially if the fish is red and BIG or has loats of teeth and is BIG - or is just generally BIG.

Nothing wrong with being a bit excited.

Just on the subject of Paul Worstelling and Scotty Hillier. I have seen both of these guys offscreen - in various places and they are both exactly the same in real life. Passionate about fishing and Crazy excited about doing it for a living. I admire guys who don't put on an act in their shows - what you see is how they really are. True - that may be a bit much for some - i guess it depends on your viewpoint.

You might be interest in this Choppa, posted on Mark Berg's Facebook page today:

We will be at the Angler's Warehouse in Tweed Heads on Anzac day (25th April) to take a local out for a fish the next morning with RU4Reel charters chasing all sorts of great fish. We will be choosing one random fisho from the store to join us and give them the chance to win cash and prizes from Daiwa and BLA. So make sure if you live in the area you be at Angler's Warehouse next Wednesday at 4pm ish to be chosen. Its a great chance to say G'day as well and talk fishing so come on down. Cheers, Bergie.

Just re-read it and you have to be a "local" - Bribie might be a stretch.

Nope, no way do I carry on like Paul or Dobson, however I am not on TV and the producer probably askes them to do it as it supposedly make it entertaining (I did say supposedly), along with Paul and his constant barrage of mentioning the store, but I suppose they have to get customers in to the stores to pay for all of this.

As for Dobson,.. well after all, he is a professional actor first so he probably just hams it up, to the point where it just grates on my nerves and I don't watch it any more. If there was a film crew on my boat, they would be bored witless, as the most they would get out of me if I caught a descent fish would be a big smile from ear to ear, that's it. boring eh! I prefer "boring" compared to obvious loud and irritating "overacting". But that just me. ;D

So as the saying goes... That's showbiz!

No doubt these guys have a fan base and I would imagine a certain large percentage would most likely copy these guys antics.

I agree, it's not me, we often put IFish on in the Pub and get told to turn it over, sometimes we laugh with our patrons at the antics on it, it's more like Seasame Street. It would be better having Russel Coight doing it, at least then you know it is supposed to be laughed at.
General opinion in our area is that we would like to see more real life stuff, without the "look at me, look at me" crap that you see there know. I'm amazed how some of the charters that he has been on hasn't ended up with him being thrown over the side due to the way that he treats them, they are more professional than he is, afterall there income depends on it.
It does depend on what you are looking for, we don't fish to impress anyone, or please any viewers, so it's probably different for us. We go to places that others don't. It makes you wonder how many hours does it take to get just 60 minutes of footage of them catching fish.
It's also crappy how they flog certain brands of equipment, and we all know that it is only because they're the ones that are supplying them, if they had to actually buy it all themselves without all the backing and corporate justification, would they have the same gear, boats, outboards, rods, reels etc.?

Cheers
Corry

PS. This is my 2c worth, I'd love to be doing what they do for a living, it's just that I'd prefer it to be a bit different for my tastes, that's all, so for now, I'm going to remain a publican working 3 days a month until I can find someone who is willing to throw me the opportunity to fish for a living.

Haha, burning the candles at both ends there corry! All the blokes that do the fishing shows do a darn sight better than i ever could, so i'll continue watching anyone catch fish when i can't be out there doing it myself. I'm always pretty excited when me or a mate gets a good fish so i guess i'm an idiot. Ben

ATM lee rayner and adventure bound is my favorite show. The techniques he shows like driving and changing angles to fight a fish, not many other shows show that. Little things like trimming your motor up while reversing. It's good tv...

Lighten up a bit lads. Some of my most comical times occur while out fishing (specially when the brother-in-law drops a big fish his reaction is priceless). Watch Hook Line and Sinker those blokes crack me up big time. Mojo

I've always considered myself a bit of a serene fisherman. You know, laid back sucking in the serenity and midstrengths.

Till the other day my young fella, just turned 4 and he saw the missus pull in a nice size silver perch and he yelled, "F&%k me! That's a ripper Mum!".

Guess he got that somewhere...

Come on you fella's don't you all do more cryin than laughin. I can just imagine it-- the thrill of that reel screamin and then nothing.

On a more serious note Adventure bound would be my pick of the fishing shows however it doesn't seem the same since the passing of its main host but still informative and its fishing.
River to reef was good when hodgy was on but its gone downhill as well. I call it the river to reef cookin show-- and that girl is sure one dumb blonde.

Greg (reefmaster) and i were talking about this topic on the P&O cruise we were both on the other day. We both came to the conclusion of "if you dont like the way these blokes carry on during there fishing shows then don't watch them", put some other boring show on, simple as that.

I would much rather watch IFISH, Creek to Coast or Extreme Fishing than watch Days of our lives, Judge Judy or Dr Phil.

cheers tim :)

It's all good to have the sh*ts and giggles until someone giggles and sh*ts...

IMO Lee Rayner is worth his weight in gold.

I speak to Paul at least once a week and he is the same off camera as SunnycoastMark said.He is bearable to watch but i would prefer Robson Green as he still gets excited like a kid when he catches fish. It's that aspect i like seeing like when your kids catch fish.

Best of all i would have to say good old Malcom Douglas.

Yeah - Robson is terrific. My wife loves to watch his show also. That self-effacing humour is terrific.

Also, there is not the preaching that we see on most fishing shows nor the ubiquitous, repetitive " Well, that is what fishing is all about" line to be found on pretty well every other fishing show.

He is not pushing any particular product either.

The only giggles i get is when i've been with Greg offshore, and watch him rip the dentures out of every fishes mouth, the hobbit wasnt far behind him.
Took TOL out a couple of times also, and though he was jigging when trying to hook a fish ?????

Do snapper have glass jaws Mr Webb??
There's got to be a reason for Greg's affliction with knobbies
