Hi all,

Haven't posted in a couple of years but pretty excited by this one so had to share!;D

I landed my first spaniard this morning, it was 1.5m long and weighed 24kg. I've been trying to land one, with varying levels of dedication, for about 10 years.

Needless to say, I'm pretty stoked!

Surprisingly quick. Only about 15mins.
Fishing 50lb braid and stout rod though. Still took a couple of nice fast runs.

Not a bad fish for a Spaniard virgin. It may take a bit to top your current PB. What area were you fishing?

Horse,
Out from Mooloolaba. I think it probably will stand as my PB for a while.

Ripper Spano, mate. What pound trace did you use? Bait, or lure? Awesome stuff.

Cuzza & Vitamin Sea, Fishing on my own using 60lb multistrand trace trolling a dead squid. Had a bit of trouble find anything decent to troll so thought I would give a squid a go. After about 45mins trolling I thought 'this is a bit of a waste of time', so I was going to try and catch some livies. Started cranking my bait in and the fish struck, gave it a couple of sharp stabs to set the hook and off it went. Pretty cool having the fish hit while I was holding the rod.

I don't know how those kayak guys land big Spaniards, I was a little hesitant about bringing that beast into my 4.5m tinny. Gave it quite a few good whacks on the head before it was invited aboard.

Nice Spaniard mate, it would of been a rush slowly winding the squid in and next minute the rod nearly ripping out of your arms

cheers tim :)

Pete,

Awesome- very nice fish. We were in the same area probably- picked up a smaller model - 1.13m - left the scales at home :(. It was my lads first spaniard also.

You ve set a high PB on the first fish- might have to put in some extra time to crack that one :)

Congrats

Tim D, It was a surprisingly gentle take. It didn't really do much until I set the hook.

Pegasus, Wish I was catching spaniards at that age!!! How old is your young fella? Can't wait to get one of my boys onto some macks or something else big. My oldest is four, thinking I've probably got another year before taking him offshore.
