Getting a Stessco catcher 430 and will be fishing one up most of the time but sometimes 2up and even 3up occasionally mostly in the river and sometimes close offshore with 2up max.
Motor choice has been narrowed down to 2, Yammie40 old tec 2st with elec start and PTT or 30 etec elec start and PTT also at around the same price.

Please help me choose .....

Are you planning on doing your own servicing, and is fuel consumption a consideration?

We may have to know a bit about you KC Do you like it slow and easy or are you a more slam bam man? Do you drive a nice a steady corolla or a thumping big V8. Do you drink pink colored drinks or stick with XXXX and rum chasers. Are you nice to your M in L, if you have one, or just offer her some left over rum?

There's so much to consider KC. At least you haven't included a 4 stroke................

The 40 for me....

The 40 is going to use a bit more fuel but we are not talking hundreds of litres here id go with the 40. A 4.3 with a 40 on the back will fly.

No not the 4 stroke, I don't want a slug out of the hole... nothing worse than having a slug out of the hole. I want power and I want it now, but I don't want to listen to RRRRrrreeeennnnnnnnnn all day and be sore from hanging onto the tiller on long trips. The ergonomics of a smoother, quiter and better tiller adjustments of the e-tec 30 IMO would be better, but i do like to go flat stick and on the 30 it will be WOT all the time and the 40 I could cruise around the same speed of a WOT 30 and have the power ontap if needed. Fuel consumption woud be about the same for the 40 at cruise as opposed to the 30 at WOT.

I'm pretty handy on the tools so servicing would not be a problem, but will proberly take it to a dealer anyway as i'm freaking getting old and lazy, my back hurts wher's me cane wtf am i buying a bang bang tinnie again.

I do like to go fast and get there quickly just not all the time i do still have some time left not much.... resale may be a consideration too, might be the difference between a pine box or a fully pimped version.

Well here is some info from Redbook

40hp Yammie is $6965 and weighs in at 90kg

30 e-tec is $6686 and weighs in at 83 kg

So the 40 is 7kg fatter and $279 more than the 30.

A 30hp is too small imo when you can a 40hp & just drive it slower & you will find that you would get good fuel economy..

I own 2004 yammie 40hp 2 stroke with PTT & electric start so that motor that gets my vote because it's reliable , solid motor.

40hp Yammy for me, I have one on a 4.2 bluefin and I reckon a 30 no matter what make would be underpowered.

You buy me the 40 yammy and I will give you my 40 merc (tohatsu repainted) that is sitting on the back of my stessco 420 skipper dlx....ha ha ha.
I would definatly go the 40 yammy, I think the 30 would be underpowered, my 40 merc gets floged by my mates 40 yammy, his is the 4.2 stessco catcher hull.

Salty-Unlikely to be the 'Yamaha' on its own doing a flogging. Would be the hull and prop playing a role among other things. There shouldn't be much if anything at all between those two engines, Yamaha has one more cc but weighs 16kg more, both are derated 50s, heaps of people race the Tohatsu 40/50s and they ain't slow. Might be time to check your rpm's.

Also haven't been in a boat with a 30 etec, have been in a boat with a 40 Yamaha, really nice engine, pretty smooth for a 2 stroke (better than my 30 Mariner aka Tohatsu). Could be worth pricing a 40 Tohatsu or 40 Merc (same engine) usually a bit cheaper than the Yammie's.

Go the yamaha 40 - I had the 50 (same motor) and miss it terribly, they aren't noisy for a 2 stroke, and if you use good oil ie XD-50 there will be bugger all smoke and even runs a touch quieteras a result.

Personally its a no brainer - the 40 wont chew much more fuel in the grand scheme of things and it wont let you down.

The little Yammy you're considering is a super sweet engine. So there's my vote!

+1 for a 40hp Tohatsu 3 cylinder/Mercury 40hp 3 cylinder (same engine, often the mercs are cheaper). Also check the price of a 40hp TLDI? They look sweet.

This is easy ... 40 Yamaha 2 stroke. But you did say you are getting along in years, why don't you look at getting a side console off ebay and a motor with forward controls and trim and tilt? I would never go back to a set up that doesn't have trim and tilt. By the way I have a 4.2m wide body Qintrex with a Yammy 30, I wish I would have got the 40 !!!

go the 40 hp yammy plenty of power smother then my 40 merc ( tohatsu) and has a good steering control so you wont get a sore arm
