Hello Ausfisho's,
Well it's been some time since I've put a report up but thats for good reason, Ive been putting massive amounts of time of Double Island and Fraser in search of new ground.
You see I'm a little surprised because while I've seen some good red emperor reports put up I haven't seen to many thanks given out to those who have shared so much knowledge.
So I thought I would change that, instead of writing a report up I thought I would talk about what I did to increase my catch rate, but the main reason for my report is to thank those who have helped me, I am a big believer in that.
I regard the mighty red emperor as the Holy Grail of the reef species with it's pitbull like head shakes and superior white textured flesh theres no denying it that seeing a big red swirling under the boat sure gets my blood pumping.
But why is it that all the reds are there to get, yet there is only a small percentage of fisho's that can catch these fish on a regular basis. I say regular because sure you can jag one or two here and there, but thats more good luck than management. It takes commitement and dedication to get those reds from the 5k up to the trophy fish around 12 to 20k, but most importantly for me it's searching for new ground that will see results.
My mates at Tin Can have given up the ghost on these fish claiming theres too much time spent travelling so while there busy chasing mackerel and snaps in close I'd rather be out chasing reds, thats why I now fish solo.
But things have not been easy and I have come away with a few fishless trips, I needed to turn to one bloke in know that has led the charge in the red department and that is Greg Lamprecht while I don't know this bloke to talk to I have a massive amount of respect for him, the shear amount of information that he has put up on the chat boards and the B&B mags is massive effort and a big thanks must go out to him, also to gregs mate Dfox that use to post up on here and to reefking.
The first thing I did was go down to one of Gregs talks on red emperor at the Brisbane boat show, it was a Friday night and it was a good one at that. When greg put the maps up it took me all of 10 minutes to realise were I was going wrong, it wasn't so much the areas he explained to search but it was more the areas that he pointed out that he thought it had been hit hard, afterall I had some of my best marks in them areas so it was quite simple, it was time to do the hard yards.
The next day I got right to it, the first thing I did was turn the GPS on while I've got thousands of marks I was about to do something drastic I picked my best 200 marks and with a quick press of the delete button the rest were gone (I had them written down if I needed for future references).
The second thing I did was study maps and picked out and punched into the GPS marks of interest.
The third thing I did was mark in my GPS trials search 1, search 2, search 3, search 4, and search 5.
The forth thing was the most drastic of all, I set myself a goal to do 5 trips, each would consist of 12 hours of searching,350l of fuel for each trip, no rods, no bait and picked areas on the map that I had studied, just try a few hours of searching and see how boring it can be, it can drive even the keenest fisho mad.
Well I hope there is a few tips for anyone that fishes offshore....So if you see a 6.2 half cab zig zagging or going around in circles and you think what the hell is that tripper doing ya can gaurantee it's me searching for the Holy Grail.
Steve
