I am considering getting rid of my old Merc 40 2 stroke and upgrading to a Merc EFI 50 4 stroke. They seem about $2000 cheaper than the other 4 strokes. Anyone know why? Was seeing if anyone has any experience with them and how they go.

Cheers Cody

Nothing wrong with them mate - i've got a 60(Used to have a 50)...why are they cheaper? all boat donks are over-priced!(Merc's just arent as much as others)

had a 60hp Merc 4str with 2000hrs on it and it was the sweetest running easiest starting motor I have encountered. go figure for a black anchor haha

was a big foot motor and did get a bit of prop rattle slow trolling as the boat beat the prop speed

Yamaha power head I believe on the EFI motor I had

I like it more than the 100hp Yamaha 4str I have now

Well they get the chinese to build 40-50-60hp 4strokes that might explain the cheaper price.

What kind of speed are you getting with merc 50hp 4 bangers?

My son did a similar thing recently, upgraded?? from a carby 40HP 2 stroke, to a 50HP 4 stroke and is not 100% happy with the performance, but he is very happy with the economy. When you look at it, there is only 10HP in it, but 10HP is 25% more than a 40!

When the moons have aligned I have got 60kph out of my 435 Hornet but that was a couple props ago.Typically I get 45-50kph before these days 2 up,batteries and gear before the porpoisemobile kicks into action.

I should also say i upgraded from a Merc 3 cyl 50 2 stroke and get roughly the same speeds if not a little better from the 4 stroke.
If I dont roar around the place the fuel usage between the two differs a lot.

Thanks for your help guys. I to have a hornet 4.35 toddy and only get about 30k/h out of the mercury 2 stroke 40hp. Looking forward to upgrading and getting more power. Hopefully can creep up on a few more pelagics instead of scaring them away with the 2 stroke.
