Hi all a couple of weeks ago i was fishing on the 100mtr line off caloundra i droped my 6' grub tail to the bottom, went to wind in the slack and it felt like i was snaged . i was just about to snap it off and all of a sudden line started peeling off, slowly at first until i gave it a bit and then it took off heading up to the surface, by this stage it had peeled off about 450mtr of line, i was nearly spooled so i tightend my drag up more. I saw a large slash of white water in the distance and then i lost it. i wound my line in and i still had my jig head on but the hook had been staightend and had snaped. any ideas on what this may had been. i thought maybe a large cobia or a small marlin. by the way we caught some big snapper and pearlys and got busted off by a large dolphine fish.

I've had small marlin do exactly the same thing. Feels like a snag or nearly shark-like and then tear off once they feel the hook. Splash would suggest marlin aswell. I have caught them on gulp's before off the bottom.

yep, a cheap jig......... :).

Nah, just joking. An educated guess would Cobia. Although, you said it made a splash on the surface and Cobes don't usually do that, but swim to the surface and have their dorsel fin break the water and many, many fishos mistake this for Shark.

The slow initial run makes me think Cobe again and certainly once they know they are hooked, they'll up the ante'.

Sounds like a little Black to me. Hooked on light gear down deep they can often take a while to wake up before getting cranked up and heading out and up fast. Had them do that myself hooked on livies on light gear a few times.

It came right out of the water.

I haven't caught a cobia in deep water but Ive had little blacks pick up baits deep. they usually race straight to the surface with slack line and you think you've been bitten off until you see it walking across the surface.

I had a very similar thing up at frazer this year .Bottombashing out wide ,thought i snagged up, then it moved off slowly then screamed to the surface an jumped about 2-300 mtrs out. I couldnt make out what it was, as it jumped in the line off the sun. When i finally got it 2 the boat it was a spaniard about 25kg.And that was on a 10 ball straight on a 2 gang lucky not to be bitten off. So that would be my call for your fish m8.
