Caught Sunday about 90km off 1770 on a Tyrnos 8 with 20 pound braid on a camo coloured plastic thingy with a 3/8 jig head and 4/0 hook.

74112 74111

18kg, 150 long and a lot tastier then I thought it would be.

Cheers,

Marto

Nice fish Marto, they go hard too.Did he come cruising past the boat?
We have had them come up to the boat and caught them with a pre rigged plastic on light gear a couple of times last year off DI.
Awesome colours when there all lit up.
How did you go with the reef fish?
Mick.

We got a few trout, lippers and job fish but spent most of the weekends 350km's searching in the 60-90m region east of Boult and upto Sykes. We did find a few likely red spots but they were either just under or not on the chew and would quite often disappear after one or two drifts.

Class fish- well done!
You'd want a few rewards for that much hunting around!
Here's hoping this SE blow coming through, stirs up a few fish.

heres a question for all you red hunters- whilst you are searching all over the ocean for those little isolated bumps holding those tasty treats, do you ever troll a lure or 2? if you travel 100s of ks at 4-6 kts, glued to the sounder, theres got to be a golden opportunity to pickup fish on the troll like this cracker dolly. does anyone do it?
cheers

When we search we usually pick a spot on the gps or try and take a bit of a different route to a mark we already have but usually sit on 15 or 16 knots and have a beer while watching the sounder and listening to the stereo. Trolling a skirt or something at that speed is probably not out of the question but I could not be bothered to tell you the truth.

i search for reds at around 25-35km/hr way too fast for trolling unless you wanna spend some time towing hexheads or something

Ah, I thought you would be sounding around a lot slower. Yeah it would be a pain trying to make lures handle that sort of speed. There we go- my question answered :)
