Hi All,

I am looking to buy a new outboard 50 or 60hp for my centre consol, got prices from local dealers on yammaha 2st all within few $ of aech other, then i got prices on mercury 2 st with 3+2 year warr for almost 2 grand cheaper for a 60 merc compared to 50 yammi, i am leading towards the 60 merc with the 5 yr warr hard to resist, has any one had problems with the mercs.

Sam.

Dont know the merc but the 50/60 yamaha 3 Cylinder engines are as good as it gets in a old tech 2 stroke.... They are truly one very very nice engine.

In saying that 2 grand is allot of $$ - I would still stick with the Yammie myself for this bracket but I dont anyone could blame you for taking the merc at that kind of saving.

Hi Jim,
I was looking at the yami due to the bullet proof reputation, but the merc must be up there as well, i seem to be drawn to the 5yr warr and the $ savings, have you come across any probs with the mercs in your field of work.

Sammy.

My latest rig came with a 60h/p 2 stroke Merc the same as the one you are talking about and it hasnt missed a beat. It is only two years old but id recommend them. I got the 3+2 year warranty as well and 2k is alot of bait and fuel I know which way I would go. I went from being a yammy owner first one a 25h/p second one a 50h/p to the Merc and I was a bit dubious a first but I can honestly say I havent looked back.

Nothing wrong with mercs in my experience. Owned one for years, was very reliable.

What price for the 50merc if you don't mind me asking?

i just got a merc 60hp 4st. is a great engine. I remember reading that mercs use yamaha powerhead but their own leg and electrics? or something along those lines.

Hey Pete did you ever go ahead and get the 70hp yammy on your boat?

2 Stroke........................I love the smell of a 2 banger as you whip across the bay. Stick it up the tree hugging greenie poonces and buy a 2 banger..........................:):):)

Gday Greg,

Sure did and it was the best thing I have done - much better al round performance and carries the load much better. Bigger prop helps keeping ont he plane at lower speed and the extra torque holds it there and brings it back up easily.

Fuel consumption almost identical, but the hull seems to work better with a bit of extra speed under it.

The Yammy is by far worth the extra $$$....the 3+2 warranty with Merc is only if you keep to their maintenance schedule and for the 40hp I recently enquired about they wanted $410 for a service...Yammy that I ended up buying is $250 for the same service :)

Cheers SS.

$410 for a 40hp? I was quoted a hell of a lot less for my 50hp merc

Here's a comparison of 50-75hp engines (bit old but covers what you're after):
http://boatpoint.com.au/engine-reviews/2000/johnson/outboard-engines-from-5075hp-8109

This one is for the Merc 60:
http://boatpoint.com.au/engine-reviews/2004/mercury/mercury-60-8304

Test of a CV50, which is the same as a standard 50 minus the oil injection:
http://boatpoint.com.au/engine-reviews/2002/yamaha/yamaha-cv50-8244

Have been in a boat which had a late 90s 60hp 2s Merc on it, very quiet and smooth for a 2s (way more so than my 30hp 2s), heaps of power, and pretty good on fuel too. The difference being what it is and both engines have been around for ages, if the Merc feels right for you then go with it.
