G’day lads,

After a great session wide of Port Stephens two weeks ago, I didn’t need much urging when Loops asked me aboard for a run today. Two very keen others in the crew, being mad keen fisho Mike and Chris, from Big Al’s Tackle at Pennant Hills. Up to Corlette last night and into the sleeping bags, then down to the marina early this morning and blasting out to the Heads with a 1 knot tail wind from the north-west:

Having heard that the bigger fish prefer live bait over jigs, we stopped to load the bait tank at Cabbage Tree Island.

The Island is covered in national park signs, a pity the money wasn’t spent on lantana control instead. The next hour or so was taken up with a 25nm run to the north-east. As we pulled up on our first mark in 165 metres the sea glassed out, to an oily blanket swell. Down went the jigs, and we were straight into a triple hookup:

But as quite often happens at this spot, by 10.00AM the fish were backing off in both numbers and enthusiasm. It didn’t help that there was hardly any current at all, in fact it was slightly from the south. With some nice fish ready to go into the ice slurry we weren’t too worried:

We prospected east, deployed a FAD, and searched some marks for a show of bar cod. Andy was very keen to deploy his new electric reel. But today was not the day for it as we couldn’t find anything worth dropping on. So, back into the inner marks, where jigs and livebait produced a few more fish.

With a long run home we decided to give ourselves an early mark. An easy run back to Port with a north-easterly tail wind, then cleaning the catch and washing down the boat.

Sadly, it may be some time until the next opportunity to fish with this great crew, due to Andrews’ career commitments - and Chris, opening a new tackle shop at The Entrance, in two weeks time. But it will be a long time before I forget the fishing and great company I’ve enjoyed today.

Cheers,
Andy

Yes mate it wasn't exactly Deadliest Catch conditions! Roll on summer I've got a feeling it will be a big one.

no mate we just went straight to 165-170m, that's where they were. As to the Entrance, it's (something) Bait and Tackle, will call him for the correct name and have an update tomorrow.
