the 773 is a different boat,a little faster than the 233,it has a planing plank.the 233 is the undisputed better offshore boat, the 773 has more cabin.both good boats

Both boats are amongst the best offshore boats in Australia. In the 23 to 26ft world there is little which comes close to the offshore performance of these boats. The 773 is a larger boat both in length and volume. Ride wise both are great boats. Having ridden both I think the 773 just pips the 233, particularly in short choppy conditions. I agree that the planing strake makes the 773 slightly faster.

The Haines brothers originally raced 233's. They then designed and built the 773 to win the Pacific 1000. It was a real David and Goliath victory with a 25 ft single engine Australian boat beating Whippy's Eagle a twin engined 35ft American made Cigarette.

You will not go wrong with either.

cause i cant IMHO separate the two for purpose and performance i think the 233 looks better. The instant curb appeal of the 233 wins hands down. I think the oldies like them cause it reminds them of a golden era or the good old times and the younger people like them cause the evolution of boats have gone to the big freeboard or slab sided look this is seen to be a much dryer safer way to build boats these days.

That said buy one of each;)

For real pedigree go with a Bertram hull.

i would have to agree the 233 is the legend boat from the past, im almost at the completion stage of my major refit on my 233 genuine Australian built 1972 model hull we have owned for 35 years
so im a bit bias i suppose??
cheers cr

you carnt really get any better pedigree than the formula 233 ,it even beat the original bertram 31 [moppy]in more than one offshore race back in the sixties.its still the 7m boat all others are compared too.everyone ive taken out in mine are in awe of its offshore ride and speed.

As i have never had the pleasure of being in a 233F jimmy shouldnt really comment but ive been in 773 L lots and fished out of it also my point is if the formula is better they must be the ducks guts both require similar power but the longer boat bit harder to trail . Makes me wonder why omc crushed the moulds early 90/s either way is there a better offshore mono ?????

i havent been in every 7m boat but ive been in a lot of boats in my life time, the standard layout is behind the times in both boats but the ride in the 233 is pretty special ,once youve been in a boat with 24 degree v its hard to go back to anything with less deadrise.
in a true trailable boat the 233 has no peer imop for offshore performance, but like all boats needs to be set up properly and balanced right,to realise its full potential

Hey Opti, I have offten wondered how the old Smugglers perform offshore.. Have you ever been out in one, if so how do they rate?

yeah the smugglers are a beast as well a mate owned a 6.6 m great hull, keith built them right.hard to fully compare to the bigger 233 but definately a great little brother.
you got your boat fixed??im ready to do some videos

midnight likes hes bertrams and they are a very well built Australian boat. Australia has produced some quality boats in the 7 mtr class and its a shame some of those legendary hulls arent still being produced.

seeing as were talking nice riding monos
havn't been in either of the above but have been in a dale 6.3 which was pretty awesome ride - straight out of harbour full pelt into chop and i expected to bash my head into the cabin but it just went through everything..- very horsepower hungry but.
have also done a few trips in a 680SF which I reckon ride wise was pretty average....
hooker 6.7 was ok..
My 680 longboat is good (but wet, low sided and slower)
one thing about all of the above boats i see as a major disadvantage is the fuel economy you cant get out of them. Single turbo diesel in a berty 25 or cairns custom craft 7m will get 1nm perl or better in the mid 20's. If I was prepared to have the expense of two outboards I'd rather a cat (townsvile)

It would be hard to pick which one is the "better" boat, they are the 2 best trailerable offshore boats ever made in my opinion. I love the 233's but I have always had a thing for the 773 and when I was looking into getting a trailer boat a while back, the 773 was going to be my pick.

But, as Jim said, I love my Bertrams and I would have another diesel powered 25 in a heart beat.

You can't go wrong with either the 233 or 773.

Cheers,
Myles

as for the fuel consumption ,my 233 with twin 225 optis ,will get 1nm per 2 ltrs @40 mph @4200 rpm.although the 2 to 1 isnt the best ,remember the speed .i can get that down to 1.3 ltr per nm @20 mph @2500 rpm.but i didnt buy this type of boat to go slow and worry about fuel consumption.wot i use 160lt per hour @57 mph.
my mates 680 haines with a 250 suzuki uses less than half what i use ,but he is twice as slow off shore,i often wait 30 mins for him to arrive at the 50,s when we leave the seaway at the same time, and im just cruising out there not racing.horses for corses.
