Since the transducer wiped itself out off the Furuno I have been making do with the little Garmin 400c the boat came with and it is doing a ripper of a job. I have certainly found it better to mark the snapper the last two weeks like in the sounding shot above. It has always been hard to separate the snapper from the bait with the Furuno and I have only ever marked one mid water snapper school with the Furuno and that was this year at Caloundra Wide where we went on to get 12 or so in the middle of the day till the show dissappeared. I know Jeffo had the combo equivalent in his father-in-laws Mustang and he could mark Marlin left, right and centre with the Garmin. For a budget unit they are bloody good.

There's some great fish there Smithy. More interesting is the seal. Read on here that they are at Ballina at the moment as well.....Whats going on there? Should there would be a few toothy critters following them around. No snorkeling for me!!!
Great report and photos

Whats the story with almaco jack's, Rob ? Are they common ? Are they a by-catch of Ambers/Kingies ?

Smithy, what model was the furuno? Was it one of the digital models 620 or 585? Just wondering if it is a problem with the digital models "filtering" out some of the information that you would had to interpret yourself with the older models. I haven't had the opportunity to fish with one of these newer digital models, only the older 582.

Almakos seem to take over from normal AJs from DI up. It is a bit like coral trout and coronation trout. One reef will have coros and no corals and visa versa but never the two species together. They are probably just mis identified most of the time. The high fins are usually on the upcurrent side of the big shows that are on the big bommies off the DI red country with rainbow runners and stuff. Not sure what the rest of those shows are. Probably surgeon fish and stuff like the shows you get at Hutchies etc.

The Garmin is a single frequency through hull. Dunno anything about it. As far as I know the boat originally only had a Garmin 240 and then maybe a Garmin 240 blue. Not sure if Pete or Mick put the 400c on.

I had a 1kw transom mount airmar transducer to a FCV585 I transplanted off the Stabicraft. I think the Furuno red/white lines small returns like yakkas the same as pan size snapper. With the Garmin the bait shows are cloudy white and the snapper were vivid thick red arches. Clear as. That is just my experience.

I just watch Ifish yesterday Friday 14.10.11 and they went out 100kms to catch ambo's of the same size as in these pictures, I think we still have a pretty good fishery here on the sunnycoast.

Smithy are you still in you blue coloured boat, I see you sometimes out fishing but I haven't seen you out there for awhile.
I think you go a bit futher than I do.
You have good reports and quality pics keep up the good work.

Symetre,

still the same contact info as per the banner below my posts. Working on a new website for the new boat.

Waxhead,

At times I catch them up 18kg or so inside of the Mooloolaba Blinker, at the blinker itself, Murphys and at random places like the Caloundra 5mile in amongst snapper. You wont see the Stabi anymore. Was using it up till May but sold it a couple of months ago. I am now full time in "Capricorn" a 25' plain white diesel mono hard top. You might have seen it about. I've had good fishing at the Gneerings lately but am mostly a bit further afield than it and Murphys but am often mixing it up with the tinny brigade in close for the soft plastics snapper at places like Coolum and Currimundi and the Caloundra Reefs.
