Just did an online quote for the polycraft as I accidently let my RACQ insurance lapse and cant be bothered doing the engine/boat/trailer breakdown thing.
Got the quote and noticed there is a $1000 excess if your boat is stolen without the use of an anti theft device. It says that a chain and lock are not approved anti theft devices, but does not say what is. I briefly read over the PDS and still could find nothing.
Anyone got any clue as to what is an approved anti theft device?

A wheel or a hitch lock would be an approved anti theft device

Andy, Wheel clamps and trailer alarm, but it can't hurt to add the trailer hitch lock too.

What about if it is locked in your property behind locked gates or locked in the shed / garage?
I think in the not too distant future there will no longer be any reason for a insurance company to actually have to make a payout.

Hey Tunaticer unfortunately I dont think it matters where the boat is locked. If you havent taken the steps that the insurance company has approved they may not payout. They only need an excuse not to pay.

Email the insurer and specifically ask. Over several years I have had different answers from different insurers. Some insurers are very specific about brand names and catagory of padlock required. Anything that involved a chain to anything was a not allowed by the 2 insurers I used.
I like the split for boat , trailer and motor otherwise they may allocate the value to their advantage.
One insure insisted the boat be behind a locked gate to get coverage. I told em the front gate was 3 foot high but I could lock it. They didn't care. They just wanted to see that force was used if teh boat went missing. Stupid as they wouldn't accept it chained to the carport floor with armour chain but would accept a $4 padlock from kmart. Another wanted a different premium if it was visible from the street at our sheds yard and it has a double top barbed wire 9 foot fence, security cameras and security 3 times a night. I know where teh boat was safer but telling them - no chance of common sense.>:(
Every year I read the full document and I see some way they can do me out of $ if something happens. Plain english my arse!! Takes friggin hours.
Especially read the the bits about the boat being stored away from its usual address

I use a hitch lock and a wheel clamp at home, and use the hitch lock at the ramp. Didnt stop the smashed window on the car though!
The way i see it is the $40 spent on the hitch lock either deters the thief or is worth $700 when it comes to the excess. Either way its a win.

Odd rules ey. I am 2 weeks off getting a carport build for a bigger boat, and the concreters are building in some points to chain a boat that will be more secure that a super cheap trailer hitch. It will also be behind locked gates.
Cormorant, I dont have a problem with the split thing, I just dont know what to do. A 4.55m polycraft hull, with a 50hp yam 4 stroke and a trailer is worth more seperated than it is combineed. So what figures do I use? The combined boat is probably worth $10-12k, but if you were to buy each part seperatly it could be worth $2-4k more. Currently the boat is stored inside a locked garage.

I know where you are coming from. I had a gearbox and prop stolen off a 150hp motor years ago. Each motor value was only about 7 grand but a new box and prop was the same cost retail. They couldn't find a suitable 2nd hand one I would accept as I had 3 months before rebuilt my existing one so had to go new - retail value $7500 but they would have paid 4500-5000. They didn't like it but t did get resolved. They tried to pull all sorts of crap about only paying a certain % as only part of the motor was gone and yadda yadda to minimise the claim and as a classic tried to tell me that the boat had to be padlocked to the dock but couldn't specify with what. They backed down when I showed tehm a transcript of their own assesser telling me that that only applied to trailer boats. Old story - cover your ass and querie anythinn that doesn't look reasonable and record the respounse on the policy and get it in writing if it is serious enough.
Frankly I over insure slightly - it doesn't cost much extra for me to do but should the worst ever happen I hope to be covered. I get a dealer to value a rig as it stands and do seperate valuation of items as then if the whole thing goes missing I have a starting point and no bullcrap from a insurer about condition or value. I also insure fixed price not market value and I update the market value.
The GIO had a clause that the boat must be locked to a trailer another one to watch out for if they still have it.
I keep the costs down by upping the excess. Not for everyone but I seriously don't want the hasle of a small claim and am realling protecting myself from something major and the indemnity that protects me from a courtcase/ liability. Hnestly I don't mind tipping in $1000 if teh whole boat or the trailer goes missing as I secure them pretty well and use some common sense. Little things ove rteh years with cut covers , kids stealing lifejackets and so on I just have never bothered with.
The more you look into insurance policies you realise you are pushing crap uphill if they don't want to pay. I try and make sure the event never happens and if it does I can document values, security, photos of condition so they have fewer avenues to reject me. Don't just add security to comply do that stuff to actually make it harder to steal. We engrave everything, , permanent marker all coves and life jackets, have prop lock, have wheel and hitch locks , stamped trailer with vin in several spots, same with hull, motor cowl leg etc all photographed so if anything is recovered there is a chance of a conviction.
Touch wood I hope to never use most of the insurance I hold.
