roger was once again the hot stick on the boat. he caught a small sand dab, sent it back down and came back with this!

roger and bryan cleaned all 40 rockfish and the ling on the way back to the harbor.

it was a little rough down by point sur, but it flattened out nicely by the time we got back to the harbor.

funchy, if you make it out to san francisco, let me know. mick, yes, it's a 4kw radar array matched up to a furuno 1934 display. excellent target discrimination. the infrared unit is the flir navagator. hook up with peter when he gets home later this week and he can tell you the story over a brew. murf, the life jackets are just a little extra measure of caution. even the gradys, as nice are they are, can roll if the seas are heavy or the captain does something stupid. failed thru hulls are the most common reason for rolling one of these boats. that's why i had a custom high water alarm installed. i still have the older grady and peter could have brought that one home, but the baggage fees might have equalled the mortgage on his house!

as far as the life jackets go, local water temp is 50-55 deg F. that's 10-13 deg C for the rest of the world. at those temps, you have 20 minutes before your hands will be so cold that you can't even work the knobs of the radios. we have a 50-50-50 rule. you have a 50% chance of survival after 50 minutes in 50 degree F water, and that is only IF you are wearing a life jacket. we have to travel to areas that are farther away to get to larger fish. and we are frequently alone. there will certainly be boats within 5-10 miles of our position, but 5 miles may as well be 5 million without a radio.

Hi Alan, Good to see a fellow pharmacist dedicated to fishing. If you ever make it down here let me know, we could organise a trip with some educational content and call it a conference ! I think however all the other guys above me in this post would be fighting to take you out first.

Alan

I have just been on a trip at 1770 here and shared a house with Peter. Somewhere over a beer or two, we got to talking about his trip and your fishing trip with him. Seemed like a great day out. That Grady looks like a very nice ride.
