G’day lads,
Down at Clifton Gardens wharf in the driving rain at dawn this morning, wondering why the hell I’m not into some nice peaceful sport, done in a warm dry living room – like stamp collecting! Peter was already there and soon after, Eddy arrived in his beaut Hydra-Sports 24 centre console. With a plan to run wide we scooted over to Double Bay Marina and filled the tank - at $1.85/litre.
First stop, Twelve Mile Reef, where quite a few charter boats were in attendance including, Wahoo, Reef Runner and Ambition. Plenty of barracouta around but not much in the way of kingfish, we dropped one after a short fight but it was not a monster. However, we did see one of Wahoos’ clients take a 90cm/6 kilo specimen which was a good sign.
On to Browns which looked plenty busy with boats at all points of the compass. We started off with an albacore jig session to no result and then deployed big mumma, the electric reel. She produced well for us today with some nice gemfish, ranging from mild to wild:

Eddy Ingram had given me some good advice, being that the tuna were well east of Browns. We decided to take that on board, and headed wide in driving rain to the 500 fathom mark. There was no sign or indication of fish whatsoever but the temp had dropped half a degree, and the water was a beautiful indigo blue. After 5 minutes of cubing, yellowfin were busting up in our cube trail. A fistful of pilchards thrown over turned the ocean surface into a rolling boil of tuna. I grabbed the mike put through a call to Dogtooth and BlueWater who I knew were back at the Mountain, but couldn’t raise them. Pete stripped a cube back and it didn’t take long before his Tiagra was howling.

I was all fingers and thumbs but finally got a hook tied on, my bait didn’t get far down the trail either.

After getting the fish on ice and into the tuna bags the school had disappeared, so we headed back into Browns for an evening session. But with pilchard stocks running low we pulled the pin and headed in early. That was a good call, with so many fish to clean. Back out there on Tuesday and looking forward to it in a big way, Andy
