I guess you are talking about those red fish with the "whiskers"? if so, yes they are edible, and indeed rather sought after by some nationalities, although I have eaten and find them OK, I wouldn't rave over them. There is a few types, one grows quite big, about 2KGish and the others are small.

Hi JJT,
They are very much a delicacy in France have had them served up at a restaurant over there and they are quite good. Not big in size and a bit fiddly to eat but all good.Perhaps give them a go.

If you mean the red stripey ones yes I have eaten them (long time ago) they were quite a sweet white flesh.

another marketting name for them is "red mullet".

not quite sure why, but maybe because they are from the "Mullidae" family of fish. (Sea mullet are from the family "Mugilidae").

yep not to baad on the chew. i read some where that some goat fishes, perhaps over sea's, can cause hallucinations, would then make for a very entertaining mother in law fish ay.;D

were they the little ones or the decent sized ones? they have various names, such as Goat fish, Red Mullet and Barbunya.

that's just marketing .
the little one 150mm long were red mullet when i started pro fishing in 81 then someone down the track decided that barbunya was a better seller.
the bigger stuff 250mm and up in real nice nick (kept well) are the big money
cheers
