Been looking at heaps of second hand boats. Seem to come across a lot with Etecs around the 200 to 250 hours mark 2007 , 2008 , 2009 models. I am just wondering if this is a lot of hours for boat this old?
Also I know these outboards claim not to be serviced for 300 hours which makes me wonder whether they require a crap load of work at 300.
Any help would be appreaciated.

My Etec has over 1300 and runs very well.

50 engine hours a year seems to be the number used to generally describe how recreational small boats are used.

If you are not trolling lures all day, I can believe the number, after the first season when the novelty wears off a bit for the average punter.

200-250 is on the average, my 2007 has 390hrs but a lot is trolling hrs.. The 300hr service is a change off spark plugs, gear oil, new anodes (if required), new impeller, grease the steering shaft, diagnostic check, and a general check over. A 250hp will cost you around $550.. Off coarse, if anything is not right, like a leaking prop shaft seal, then that will need replacement and a vacume test which will cost you a bit more....

this comes up all the time, there is no REAL amount of hours when an outboard just magicly destructs/blows up, they can go for thousands of hours, or be scrap at 20 hours, proper setup, regular use and maintenance is the key to long life, an old motor with very low hours can be more problems than a newer one with higher hours, salt water will kill them all eventually, but most die an early death from over propping, a water pump or oil failure or something like that long before they wear out.

Exactly NM, good point, that also applies to any other marine installation.
