The boat was clipped on the towball at 5.30AM this morning, as we made our way through the early morning darkness bound for the Lake Burrendong State Park main boat ramp.
After launching the boat, the outboard coughed to life as warm thick winter jackets were zipped up ready for the crisp winter time morning boat ride up the Cudgegong arm of the dam.
Fishing with light spin rods rigged with six and eight pound braided line and 9 pound leader, the redin were soon on the bite, with a few fish caught in the main basin on 1/8 and 1/4 ounce jig heads in both natural and bright fluro coloured two inch curl tail soft platic lures.
Begging the sun to come through the overcast sky and warm our bones, long time fishing friend Jason Walters and I decided to change our target species to Golden Perch, after landing around a dozen redfin to to just under 40cm not far from the spillway bay.
The Yellowbelly seemed to be well and truly in their winter slumber, after several likely looking rock walls lined with dense timber failed to produce even abite. A few rouge Redfin kept us interested however, and we fished on in the hope of finding an oversize winter Yellowbelly that we know Burrenodong can produce in the cold winter months.
Half heartedly fishing a spindley tree in barely four to five metres of water, my rig was soon smashed by a heavy fish on the second cast, and after a breif battle, a 57cm Golden came boat side and on board for a photo, making the early morning fishing trip suddenly very worth while!
When Yellowbelly grow over the 50cm mark, they certainly take on a trophy status, with the iconic Golden Perch bump on top of the head, and a football shaped body making them often quite tricky to extarct from their timber and rock lined layer.
