I thought I would put this in a new thread other than the rebuild one.

There seems to be regular requests for information on how to put a trailer on the grass.
Intentionally of course.

The boat is my Haines v17c. There is rope run through the ski hooks on the transom. This rope is tied off to a tree. The trailer is still connected to the tow vehicle.
Unhook the winch rope and the safety chain.
The first tyre(no rim::)) is placed under the rear of the boat.
My trailer is high enough for me to place a tyre(no rim::)) under the cabin part of the boat before starting this exercise.

Slowly drive forward.
After a meter or so check, or get a helper to check that the rear tyre is far enough under the boat. The rope does stretch.

If all is ok keep driving slowly forward. Straight.

To put the boat back on, unhook the trailer from the vehicle and winch the trailer under the boat. Most of this winching will be around head high until you get enough of the boat past the axle(s).

Take it slow and steady.

Nice rebuild there Rod. Those old buggers did a very nice job.

Nice - there must come a point where this will not work - ie with increased boat length and weight. I like the idea of stake into the ground up against the gunwale rubbers/fenders to stop it toppling over.

Nice looking 17 there Rod, been well looked after and original is it? What stuff did you end up putting in frame. Tuna oil works well and if there's a leak it doesn't look bad at the ramp.

Nice job all round. I put that bituman stuff on my last trailer rebuild and lots of cold gal. After a year its ok but not 100 percent. My trailer is never washed and get fully emersed most times though, being a beach launch.

Rod, last time I had to put a boat back on the trailer I left the vehicle attached, out of gear and no hand brake. The boat literally stayed where it was and the trailer and car moved backwards underneath it. I didn't like the thought of the trailer sticking it's nose in the air.

The old blokes had a ball Steve.
Their itching to do some more.

Ozscott. In my last lot of photos in the rebuild thread you can just make out the rear end of a boat in the shed.
Thats a 23foot ski boat. Seats 10 people. 470 mercruiser and leg. We had that sitting on 3 tyres to do some work on the trailer.
I dont know how big a boat you could use this method on.

We find with the trailer off the vehicle, it is easier to move the trailer from side to side to get the angles right.
I repositioned some of the rollers this time. A couple of small adjustments had to be made as the boat was coming up.

Original hull Jack. From the gunnells down was resprayed when the transom was done. Last century.
Top half is original paint. 100 liter underfloor tank and baitboard are the main additions.
