View Full Version : Trailer rebuild. My way

The trailer under the old Haines V17C was built in 96. Regular maintenance has not been able to stop the inevitable encroach of brown cancer.
So time for a rebuild.
The trailer is in 2 sections. 1 I call the carriage, holding the axle, suspension, brakes and wheels.
The 2nd is the frame with rollers holding the boat. These 2 bits are U bolted together.
At this stage the worst bit is the carriage. This will be done now and the frame in 12 months when I get the time and money. The front half of the frame, winch post etc is still in perfect nick. This bit doesn't get wet.

As you can see it is a single axle.
After the dramas of the last trip to Tin Can and the uncomfortable feeling of not quite trusting the single anymore, I have decided to go to a tandem.

Over engineered? Possibly.
Over kill? Probably.
But what the hell. This is my project and I can **** it any way I like.

I will be using the current brake axle on the front and putting a lazy on the rear.
Correctly cut( on a mates steel cutting bandsaw drop thingy) gal steel, springs and kits, roller brackets and guards were delivered to my old mans place today.
He is a retired farmer (bush welder) and his next door neighbour is a retired panel beater (proper welder).
Should keep them busy for a bit.:)

Thats it for now.
More to come when there is more to show.

P.S. Anyone got a couple of 13 inch 5 stud rims for sale.

Thanks Garry.

I was contemplating 14s all round but the current tyres are less than 12 months old with about 400ks on them.
Part of the Tin Can drama.

6 of 1, half a dozen of the other.

No hurry with the other stuff.
Still going great.
Anytime before the end of September.

Progress.

The 2 old boys are getting stuck in.
I just turn up to ensure the measurements and placement are right.
And supply the grog.

Got a picture of what wheels you have now Rod??
I have a couple 13" Holden's about that may match and your more then welcomed to any that match up.
I think there's a white alloy and also a galvanised rim in the shed.

Hi Finga

Here's a pic of the current rims.
Holden or ford, I'm not sure, although the bearings are ford.
Makes my head hurt sometimes trying to get my brain around the different bearing and hub sizes.
Especially after a couple of beers.

I spend the morning working on the work trailer.
Flipped the axle, put 6 stub hubs to run the same rim and tyre as the Triton.
Levelled it to the truck perfectly. No more trailer a*** drag.

So, I now have 3*16inch rims(5 stud) and good tyres plus 2*5 stud hubs with holden bearings(4 months old) to get rid of.
Swappsies anyone?

If the wheel you have is Holden pattern then I have rim and tyre for you.
The rim is galvanised and in a bit better nick then the one in the picture. They tyre....dunno. it's off the big boat trailer and is years old. I changed to alloy wheels on it.

I'll be in Brisbane the from after the long week-end.

Thanks Murf. My trailer needs more time at the doctors and I'm starting to wonder at what point I'm throwing good money after bad. How hard can it be for a competent welder to build a sturdy frame that is easily washable? The problem with trailers that come with the boat is they use very thin metal and tiny holes to let plenty of salt water in but nowhere big enough to wash it out or get anti corosion stuff inside.

Anyone built an open box style frame?

when you finish the job a good coat of tectyl is a must. Coat everything springs, axle, hubs. Just don't put it on the brakes. Looks like $h!t but puts great protective coat on metal.

Thanks Finga.
But I may have sorted a set here. I will know by thursday.

No hot dip for this one. It will cost more than the parts which are gal any way.

Yes wiz. It will be totally covered with crap that won't look pretty. Like me.

More pics tomorrow.

The frame is all 3mm gal rhs. When finished, the rhs will be sealed except for a 12mm hole on the top of each sealed section. There is a m10 gal nut welded over this hole that takes a gal bolt. Into this hole will be poured some...stuff. About a third full and the bolt tightened down. This....stuff should slosh around nicely while towing.
Not sure what....stuff yet.

its too late now but the best trailer I have seen is a Trailcraft I beam. They look great and not being hollow would be far less prone to rust.

Finally done after a few dramas.

Took the boat over to a mates place. As you can see from the pics he has plenty of space for this job. And plenty of junk as well.

Dropped the boat off the trailer and set to work.
Didn't get very far. Sunday morning started with hanging the springs and this happened on the last bolt to be tightened. Had to wait till monday to get a new one. Trailer bloke reckoned they have never had one do this. Must have been a bad bit of steel. Or I'm stronger than I think and I needed a smoke.

Today was the day and finally got it done.
Grease and bitumen from ahole to breakfast time but it's done.
