Hi Guys,
Mate is looking at buying an old boat, appears to run OK, the boat is an old Bellboy 1/2 cabin,
The motor is a Johnson 135 2st (1975 vintage),

Couple of questions,
Are "generic parts available for these old motors, mainly interested in Tacho!,
Any guess at suitable planing revs?
Regards,
Gary

a 135 on an old Bellboy will have no problem planing! lots of parts will be available from wreckers and some new as well, only drama will be corrosion in such an old motor, years kill the best motor when salt water is aded.

Tks for the reply,
Amazingly, corrosion does not appear to be all that bad, must have been flush well in the past,

Gary

Bellboys ranged from 15' to 25'. Might be a bit hard to guess the engine's ability without a boat size?

Bell Buoy's ( correct spelling) were not bad old hulls.

Is the taco crook or the rectifier?? An inoperative taco can be an indication for a crook rectifier

Get the usual checks paying particular attention to the motor and timber in the boat and if that all comes out good then it should be a good rig.
Electrics should be shot on a boat of that vintage but easier rectified then rotten stringers, transom and water jackets.

Buying an old boat/motor is like buying a 25 year old Commodore.
You might get a good one but the chances are your getting someone's headache.
Check 3 times and buy once.
