Hi all,

I am replacing an old 25HP brown band Merc and want your opinion on a new outboard.

I need something with an electric start and as I have a steering wheel I don't require tiller steer.

I am considering 2 strokes due to $$. Wanting to spending mid 3k's.

I got a price for a 30 Merc for 3.5k at Springwood Marine today. The Mercs have a 5 year warranty which is appealing.

I am also interested in the Yamaha's but have not priced them as of yet. Any recommendations or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 30hp 2/s suzuki. got it new 2 1/2 years ago and just sold it and the boat. I never had any problems with it, price was right and had the benifit of both electric and pull start

If you're looking at conventional 2 strokes for price reasons rather than 4 strokes or injected 2 strokes then I can recommend the 3 cylinder Yamaha 30 horse 2 stroke.

They run smoother and idle better than the 2 cylinder 2 strokes.

Ill second that for the yammy 3cyl 2-stroke 30. i hav had one(a 2002 model) for a few years now and it is by far the nicest, smoothest, quietest. easy starting, etc' 2-stroke i have ever used. I hav used quite a few others and none even come close to being as civilised.

I'll second the yammy too. Great engine. I started mine yesterday(2004 model). First time in 7 months. Second pull and fired up. They are smooth and reasonably quiet for a 2 stroke. I have it on a 410 brooker, 4 people and gear and it will do 20knts easily.

Yer ill vote for the Suzuki 2 stroke, had one on my 4m tinny, bloody unreal motor, and cheap too! I paid under $2500 (cant remember the price) new with an electric start

Thanks everyone for your quick replies. I live on the northside of Brisbane. Do you recommend any dealers that sell Yamaha on that side of town?

That little 3cyl Yammie is a great little motor......hard to beat in that class.

if you are willing to buy something that's not necessarilly the current model, you occasionally see old stock ones for sale for the right price.

the 3 cylinder yamaha is the pick of the crop but if you don't have a need for it's low rpm smoothness (trolling friendly) and just want it to go from a to b, then any of the 2 cylinder ones will be a bit cheaper and be just as good for you.

if you wanted second hand, there's a 2008, 4 stroke mercury 30hp for sale in the low $2k's in the tradingpost, which i thought was exceptional value for a near new, second hand, new technology motor, or there's a 2010 30hp 2 stroke mercury that's apparently only had 3 tanks of fuel through it for low $2k's which is still pretty cheap for a new donk.
