2001 MODEL 125HP MURCURY 2-STROKE WITH 320 HOURS.

im currently looking at a boat that has a 2001 MODEL 125HP MURCURY 2-STROKE WITH 320 HOURS.

how long can a motor last?
if it was kept in good condition how many more hours can i put on it?

and when will the engine need a rebuild?

any info on this would be of great help.

regards jake

10 years old and 32 hrs per year. Not a huge amount.
Mine 2005 with 450 hours still goes well.
Can you get a printout from a dealer/mechanic showing alarms etc?
If there is a good service history and checks out ok - why not.

Its done nothing just gotta look out for bottom crank seals deteriorating over time and letting water in.

Those things looked after are good for upward of a thousand hrs and even then a quick pull down light hone and a new set of rings and bobs your uncle away you go again for many more hours.

a carbied 2stroke outboard motor itself can last between 700 and 1000hrs before it needs a hone and new rings as well as doing crank seals ect.

however after about 600hrs you need to keep an eye out on the rest of the outboard. engine mounts, trim motor, trim rams, wiring, starter motors and other components on the engines get tired at this age.

320hrs is fine providing the engine has been looked after. and if you only plan to use the boat less than once a fort night (which is about average use) you will get plenty of use out of the 125hp.

our optimax 90hp is 18 months old and done 215 hours - it's only just run in! :)

all depends on how it has been looked after. anything that has been abused and not serviced will have a short life.

All depends they say the worst thing with a two stroke is when it doesnt get used, my previous boat had a 1994 mariner 135hp two stroke was six years old no idea how many hrs it had, in the nine years i had it i put 1800 hrs on it and it never went to a mechanic i did all the service work myself, sold it still going strong.
Cheers MM8-)

id expect that boat would be pretty good if the owner hasnt trashed it, they wouldnt of been a huge operation in 01 so build quality shouldnt be a problem, there 4.8m models have always had a good rep and a lot are sold

Just like buying a vehicle bassed on KM, buying an outboard bassed on hours, is not wise.

You realy have to look at what condition the motor is in.

It's only recently we have had any idea of how many hours a motor has done.

Older motors have no hour counter of any discription.

really.

i was wondering why so cheap, because the 5.5m models are going for alot more $$$$ but obviously being new models.

i now wonder why it has taken so long to sell.

One thing that we must understand, if we want to do well in the second hand market.

Large dollar items sell slowly, particularly if they are fairly priced.

The larger the ticket price the slower it will sell.

another question. haven a few drinks tonight with mates and the conversation was taken up about 2 strokes and 4 strokes.

whats everyones opinions on 2 strokes and are they really that out of date.

4 stroke is obviously todays motor but for a first boat a 2 stroke will get you to A to B and will still be alright.

And it will be easy to understand and simple to repair.

ive had several outboards that have done thousands of hours and never missed a beat both two stroke and four strokes so how long they last will be determined in time.
