View Full Version : E-TEC 175hp reports ?

Looking to repower with a 175hp motor and narrowed it down to Suzuki or ETEC.
I love the Suzuki's (currently have a 140hp) and the Suzuki 175hp seems to get universally good reports, but recent price drops and cashbacks have put the Evinrude ETEC well in front price wise (up to $3k cheaper).
ETEC is also reportedly 25kg lighter, less maintenance, better hole shot (dealer words not mine).
Has anyone got actual unbiased reports or comparisons ??

I have a E-tec 250, and I like it very much.. But what you buy is up to you...
Fact is both motor had problems, E-tec had a few injector problems, while Suzuki had few corrosion problems.. Both brands have sorted out there issues and both make a great reliable motor... What it comes down too is what do you want from your motor..
As for fuel consumption, there going to be similar. the E-tec will use a bit less idling and trolling, and the Suzuki will use bit less cruising..
The E-tec only requires a dealer service ever 300hrs or 3 years, but it also requires oil.. So running costs are on par with a 4st.. Due to the dealer service being 300hrs, you are required to do your own maintenance, like check for line around prop shaft, check for leaking gear oil, lubricate streering shaft.. Of coarse if you dont feel confindent doing all the maintance yourself, you can take it to your dealer for them to do it for you....
The remote oil tank will only need refilling every 50- 60hrs... provided your using XD100 oil with the EMM switch to the XD100 setting... Most E-tecs run at an average off 80:1 ratio... if your over propped or under-powered your going to chew through the oil much faster..

Can't offer comment on the eTec, but went through this recently when we set our boat up.
Out choice was the Zook 175, based on the type of use, open ocean cruising and trolling. Would have gone the 200 but the extra weight wasn't worth it.
There are some threads on here with views and opinions, we had criteria that would have spent the extra 3G regardless, figuring we will have to live with our choice for many years to come.
We expect that we will get ten years out of the engine @ 150 per year, so it costs us $2 an hour not to listen to the pitch of a two stroke or put up with the oil smells. We all get seasick, it is worth the dough for us. Your circumstances will vary, so think about what really matters to you, and what makes it enjoyable.
Hope this helps

Just recently messed around with powering 7.5m GRP RHIBs.
Some with twin 150 etecs others with twin 175 suzis.
As a compare from our stats...
ETEC
24 knots = 0.45 Nm/ltr
WOT fuel = 120ltr/hr & 42 knots 5750rpm
Suzi
24 knots = 0.65Nm/ltr
WOT = 95 ltrs/hr & 46 knots 6100rpm
Is it fair to compare a 150 DI 2s against a 175 4s?
For running costs, we've found that if you dont stick to 300hr services with the etec, then you'll end up behind in the $$ stakes given oil use at $15/ltr. We've found that the etec ends up in the shop prior to 300hrs...& have made services every 100hrs to negate issues.
Also check the weights & make sure that compare apples with apples. With/without props...wet/dry noting that you'll have a reservior with 8ltrs of oil with the etec.
With motors this size, 15 kgs in nothing I'd reckon.
I suggest you listen to both motors at idle & assess resale value.
This will make the decision for you.
Enjoy the shop...

Definately look at resale as a lot of dealers won't trade them no matter what the age or hours

I am just doing the exact same thing, going from a 140 Zuke I looked at Etec,s, Optimax and Suzuki. I just could,nt make myself go past the Suzuki 175 expecially after having such a good run with the 140. Pick it up in a weeks time.

your EC 565 will finally come alive with the DF175 !!! enjoy it.
and in response to the ETEC debate yes look at resale, but if that doesnt concern you then you will save some $$$ upfront, but the 175 Suzuki is really a great engine, those comparo figures would be accurate to as also know of a direct comparo of Etec 175's and 175 Suzuki's ona Cootacraft and the Suzuki's outperformed in everyway.8-)

Don't know what boat you are putting the engine on, but I have a 580BR Signature with the 175 Suzy. Holeshot is nothing short of awesome, I dont know about the E-Tec but to be honest I have never been found wanting for grunt either down low, mid range or top end!

Thanks for the feedback fellows. Food for thought. The Suzuki will be hard to go by, just wish they were more price competitive given current exchange rate.
Pricing and resale seems to be very subjective probably based more on what the local market will bear, rather than perhaps motor quality. A quick check in the USA pricing indicates ETEC are one of the most expensive brands, while Suzuki's are one of the cheapest.
For those interested, both USA manufacturer web sites, have vast numbers of official boat tests, many with either brand on identical boats.
In summary, while results occasionally go either way, as far as I can gather, it appears the Suzuki has slightly better economy mid range to full throttle (perhaps 5 - 10% better) while Etec use only around 50% fuel consumption at idle / slow trolling speeds. Top speed appears slightly in favour of Suzuki (maybe 1 - 2 mph)

Monza - this is really interesting. For anyone who want to see have a look at Edsmarine Superstore...the 4 stroke Zuke is the same or cheaper than the equivalent in Etec and about the same in Optimax from memory.
Does that say that the Yanks love their own brands so much they will pay for them more then we will...I really dont know but I suspect that is the case. Here why anyone would WANT to pay more for an etec than the equivalent hp Zuke I dont know unless its down to throttle response and weight, but not for this little duck.
Cheers
