View Full Version : How to remove helm?

I am relocating the position of my steering helm up another 200mm.

TO do this, I am removing my existing helm and replacing it with a brand new helm.

But, I cannot remove this existing helm.

I have tried to drill some 3-4mm holes in the circular nut holding the helm - so that I can crack the nut and then the bezel will fall inside.

Clearance is an issue to drill these holes and the nut hardness is HARD.

I have managed to drill a couple of holes, but that's it.

I have tried to break it with the cold chisel/hammer - without luck.

Photos show this circular nut inside.

APologies for the picture quality - issues with lightng and camera quality.

Help???

Can you get a 100 mm angle grinder in there. Is it a nut or a circlip that you can lever out of a grove??

no i cannot get a grinder in there - too little clearance.

it is not a circlip (or not spring loaded), but rather a largish nut with 2 x steps.

all done.

I was able to grind, mangle and mash my way out without damaging any of the console.

Play time.... :-)
