After months of talking about it, Vossy and I managed to finally get out for a fish off the Gold Coast thursday morning (31st Mar). We took Vossy's big cat out for a run, and it was very comfortable fishing. It a 9 x 6m cat, set up for cruising, with twin Suzuki 50 hp four strokes.

His father in law also joined us for the trip. We crossed the seaway about 5.30am and headed for the baitgrounds. Set up a spread of Halcos and cruised around for the morning.

First strike was a striped tuna, next was a good spanish, followed by three or four stripes. We went out to the 24s then into mermaid, around a few marks wide of mermaid and home. We also go one undersized spotty, and a Mack tuna that got sharked.

The action wasn't thick and fast, but it was a great day cruising around, weather was fantastic, pretty easy to get used to the comforts of the big cat. Fishing from the lounge was very comfortable!

Lures used were Laser Pro 160 and 190s, 4 and 5m scorpions in 120 and 150mm. All lures caught fish.

The spaniard went about 10kg, and I got a huge amount of steaks off him. The freezer was bare, so it was great to stock up again.

Back in around midday, bar was easy, even thought the tide was still running out and nearing the bottom. Only used about 65litres for the day, pretty good for over 6hours of motoring.

Looking forward to getting back out there!

Cheers,

Matt

Nice spaniards Matt!

what sort of cruise figures you seeing with the twin 50's?
Any piccy's of the whole boat, interesting.... we are looking at cruiser / mothership options at the moment.

Vossy said he's using about a litre per nautical mile, cruising at about 14-16 knots. Based on a trip sailing down from the Whitsundays to Gold Coast. Has a 250 litre tank, pretty big range.

I haven't got any whole boat pics at the moment, I'll see if I can get some.

Cheers,

Matt

Hi Matt,
Wouldn't a cat of that size be horribly under powered with twin 50"s??

Hey tony,
Not all cats are the same as yours mate. Think of something more like a hybrid between yours and a sailing cat and could have high thrust 50's.
