View Full Version : Wide Bay Bar, how much swell to make it not viable?

G'day,
I have only ever crossed Wide Bay Bar in excellent conditions, not planned, just got lucky.

How much swell is required to make it a bit iffy normally?

I will ring the Tin Can Bay coast guard and talk to them at some stage also, but if some of the regulars here can give me an idea, that will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Myles

Any more than 1.7m from the S, SE and it's the gutter for me unless I can cross on the last 2 hours of the run in! It's way to far offshore to muck around with if it's any bigger than this IMHO!

Thanks Ian,
Is that to use the main channel? Or the sneaky one on the southern side?

Cheers,
Myles

1.7 for the main channel and anything more I'll either use the fishermans gutter ( the sneaky one) or stay at home!

Thanks Ian,
I have only crossed it in a boat that draws 10 feet, so we used the main channel on the high tide.

I will look into the Fishermans gutter crossing as we will be coming from the south into the bar in my Bertram 25.

Thanks again,
Myles

its not so much the se wind thats the problem but more the se swell.
The fishermans gutter can get very shallow at low tide.
Caution should be taken when crossing the main bar in the afternoon as the sun makes it hard to see the sector light
