what is your current snorkelling / swimming / free diving ability?
No spearing in the goldcoast seaway ( http://www.divingthegoldcoast.com.au/ ) but top of hightide usually is great snorkelling along the wall which will help get your skills up and practice diving without holding a gun. You will need a wettie, weights, boots (depending on the fins you get) fins, gloves, mask/snorkel and its handy to have a knife on your leg and a gun of course. Flashers, Floats and bouys depend on what you intend to catch and where.
This store is good too see what you need and get recommendations on what and where.. http://www.scubadiving.com.au/pages/about_us

a handspear and goggles is all you really need... fins, weights and a spear gun etc just make it easier ;) .

Good info Triple, I just recently bought a hand spear (on special and couldn't resist) and was wondering where to find this info.
