I have a 1987 Yamaha 140Hp with serial number 140CET0 6F3 UL 751364. This model was only released in Australia so it is not listed in boats.net. only the 115 and 150.

I am looking for a water pump kit, can any one tell me if part number 6G5-W0078-A1-00 would suit, it is for the 150hp. As far as I know the 140 is based on either the 115 or the 150 but I dont know which one.

Bet my life on it that Australia was no way near the only country, we where an even bigger backwater back then seems impossible but it's true, never seen an outboard only released in Australia as a true stand alone version...now that that's over and done with :) what is the very closest match you can find on boats.net?

The closest I can find looks like the 150hp but the 115 looks very similar as well. I am asuming that the 140 and 150 were the same except for engine size.

The only difference will be the sticker, they effectively did whatever they wanted back then upping or decreasing hp via the sticker ONLY for whatever market they where slotting into, mercury was very good at it but they did it globally.

Bottom line is if your motor is a 6cyl the usa 6cyl of the same year will be the same and if yours is 4cyl then the 4cyl will be identical.

Within this there is also common sense for instance some engines turned an opposite hand prop, some had jet legs, some had gearing to suit a more particular application but each of these could also be found identical in the USA too.

is yours a 4cyl?

Yeah mine is a 4cyl, same as the 115. The 150 is a 6. I tracked down a couple of manuals and found the gearbox oil capacity of the 115 and 140 is 790mls and the 150 is 983ml so it is probably the same as the 115.

Dave, quite a bit of spares for these at the wreckers... could be best sorting through there box of bits for yammies... did the plate not do the trick??

you would be right i suspect, just like you say make sure the paticular leg (or any particular part) on the 140 engine you have is the same on the US identical version of your engine but may be stickered a different Hp.

I do this by pulling up the options and comparing, the part numbers will be the same and will only change if superseded and should state that.
One other thing to watch is the colour change in 1991?? this will force a modified part number, the part is identical in all respects almost exclusively but for the colour.

here is the trick, some parts discontinued can be discontinued only because of colour no other reason or if a part is hard to source because it is from an older yamaha you can without fear choose the new coloured part...and it may even be cheaper.

I refurbished an 85 90 yam, due to the reasons above i changed it's colour to the newer one total cost was also less as a result, that was near 5 years ago now and all parts where from boats.net.

I need to make an order from them again for the first time in a few years if you have any problems please let me know.

cheers

Hey Garry,
Nah unfortunatley the plate didnt do the trick....bugger. Might try the wreckers this week but would like to go new as long as I can sort out which bloody part number I need, seems like the 140Hp is a black hole!

Just another thought about the labelling of your outboard. 1987 might be the year it became compulsory in Australia to rate motors according to HP at the prop; not the option of the flywheel. It rings a bell for me as I bought a new Johnson VRO 70 that year and couldn't believe the power increase from my older 60. Apparently the 60 was flywheel HP and the 70 was prop HP.

For the record the I have heard back from Yamaha who tell me the part number is 6E5-W0078-A1, which is for the 115. Thnaks for your input guys.
