gday, i've got a homemade timber/ply punt that previoulsy had a polyurethane clear lacquer paint on the hull. i just want to sand this off and paint the hull again. can i just get away with painting it with some normal household paint either enamel or acrylic or will it just come off with prolonged exposure to water and i really should use dedicated marine paint. just want to keep things cheap and easy and i dont mind if i have to do it again in two years time.

If you really don't mind doing it all again in 2 years time then you probably could get away with sanding back the clear coat and applying a good oil based household undercoat and enamel. Beware that if it is a varnish finish then it is always difficult to get paint to stick to it.

If you wanted to do a proper job then strip off the varnish either with a heat gun or chemical peal, sand the bare wood and go for a proper marine polyurethane system.
