At 1pm on Saturday, around 50 IWRA (Inland Waterways Rejuvenation Assoc.) members and volunteers met on the banks of the Macquarie River near Dubbo to release 16,528 Murray Cod into the Macquarie River and Lake Burrendong. The $16,000 worth of fingerlings was purchased to boost native fish numbers throughout the Macquarie River System and Lake Burrendong, and were released at 8 different sites stretching between Wellington and Narromine.
It was a great sense of achievement for the IWRA committee, who have been working on securing fingerlings to release annually for over two years.
The money to purchase the fingerlings was raised by The Lake Burrendong Classic not for profit catch and release fishing competition.
The combined fundraising efforts have also secured the purchase of 14,545 Golden Perch, which will be released into Lake Burrendong and The Macquarie River in March. The release of these fingerlings will take the total number of fingerlings released by the IWRA, since its establishment in 2008, to 80,044, some $33,000 worth, thanks largely to The Lake Burrendong Classic!
