Hi Guy's, Hope some one can help. I have a trailcraft 6.4m and I am looking at putting a new Mercury 150hp optimax on the back. Does anyone own one and how do the go on fuel Wise being a 2 stroker.
Also looking at a Lowerance sounder HDPS 7 any comments on that would be great. It time to spend some money on the boat and not the wife.;D

Latest model otpi 150HP great motor could be up to 25-30% better on fuel than normal 2 smoke! some even have said better than 4 stroke, not the normal smoke of a 2 banger and performance plus, SST prop standard and smart craft gauges. The HDS7 is also a good choice mate, sounds like your all over it, add the structure scan and the fish will be shi*ing emselves! enjoy

Good choice. I have a 135, 2003 model and very happy. Getting 1 Nm per litre on a 575 Outsider

I recently put 40 hours on a 150 Opti on the back of a 5.8 Noble. It was slightly over propped and averaged around 0.8 - 0.9 Nm per liter in varying sea states.
Couldnt fault the motor at all even tho i only had it for 40 hours running time I just decided that a 175Pro Xs would be more fun and if i didnt put it on now i would never do it.
The boat with the 175 uses the same fuel as the 150 spinning the same 17" Vengeance prop but its top speed is up around 36 Knots compared to 30 with the 150, I think the top speed would have been better if i had changed props on the 150 but its only money so the 175 got the nod.

Cheers

Thank's guys for your comments,
it looks like the way I will go. Just gives me a bit more confidence with the choice other than the speel you get from the sales guy.

All the new motors are good these days, only down side of an Opti when I was looking was the size, they are a BIG motor, not that it is really a problem, but they seemed to be heaps bigger than anything else on the market in the same HP range.

shep,
a mate of mine has a 150 opti (about 2006 or so) on his quintrex 610. he has never had a problem and its great on fuel. when we used to do 2 boat trips, he used to get similar economy to me with a 140 suzi. he gets about 1NM/L i think.

get the digital merc monitor/eco gauge fitted. it is about $350 cheaper than the standard sc1000 gauges. you can buy the nmea 200 cable from lowrance/ garmin for $70 and hook it straight to your gps.
this will then give you fuel estimates to waypoints as well as many other features.

Thank's Mega'bite,

I did the phone around for some prices on Monday Morn, you quickly find out with the dealers/ sales man who know what they are talking about, and how much profit some of them make for the same fitout.... One s/man did not even know they made a opti 175hp. I won't be going to their dealer ship....
