Hey y'all - I think these are more common in Qld than over here in the West - particularly caught in the ocean just below Geraldton) 300 clicks north of Perth.

Anyway, its a pretty rare catch and its taken us ages to track down that its a Psammoperca waigiensis. Knowing what it is is one thing, finding info about it is OK, but nowhere can we find its ediblity rating. Remember, ocean caught from clean waters. Any ideas?

Cheers

Grant

Grant,

Hi. According to Ern Grant's " Guide to Fishes " the Sand Bass is " a worthwhile panfish, though it lacks the immense popular appeal of the Barra itself " to which it is closely related.

hi if they are the same sand bass we catch in qld (ie look like a barra but nearly black in colour) then they are great chewing in my opinion. YUM! i always welcome them into the boat!

just gotta catch em big enough for a couple of worthwhile fillets. they dont grow big and a 40cm fish is a very good one
