Simple math says that Mt Bowen, highest point of hinchinbrook at just over 3000 feet should be visible at about 110km out to sea, at sea level. At 70km you should be able to see anything above about 1000feet above sea level. Comparitively for those of us who live much further south, we dont have any mountains anywhere near that high, with the exception of Mt Warning in northern NSW.

good eyes whiteman, Yeah flex thats what we got twice now since then water was green on tuesday all the way out there but wed n thu it cleaned up on the run in. I did blow the pic up a bit so you could see it on this site but it is much easier to see with naked eye. And I can see land 100km out in the whitsundays but I wasn't out there last week so hence no pic of that. And you should know how well you can see from that far out dean with that nice big cat how I wish I owned 1 of those.

If you were out there on Friday you would have seen me about 1/3 along the SE edge of Trunk.

D river u r right u can see land 100 km out from the whitsundays. i worked on the knuckle reef pontoon for 3 yrs which is 54nm(ha ha) from airlie beach in a straight line.

however the islands u r looking at are 16nm and 18nm from airlie in the direction of knuckle reef which puts them only about 37nm from ur position....mmmm...double it and take off 10% and thats about 67km in ur language!! :-)

yea whiteman I seen a few boats out there this trip we were diving all the bombies in a orange n white boat went back into lucindaat around 1130 and yes mmmouse your right about them islands from that pontoon but over at martin reef and showers reef and gould reef you can see glouster island whish would be 100k approx from them. and not sure how far bowen is from there I'd guess about 80km but you can see its lights at night.

On a day like that in Sydney just keep the brown haze to your left and you're trolling north north east so the noreaster blows u home. Who needs a gps or compass when u have pollution to rely on ;D
