Motor hight And trim

Since the transom has been replaced and I have a motor that actually alters trim when underway I am getting a tad confused.
Testing time has been limited due to the weather and deckies that I cant trust to pilot a boat at 40 plus km/h.
Boat is a Cruise Craft Reef Ranger with a Evinrude 150 and a Viper 14 3/8" x 17 prop

So to try and get an idea of what's going on I levelled the boat and motor with a spirit level.

Trim gauge with both level.

Runs ok there but seems to increase a km or 2 with it at this position.

The problem I have is that slightly more than that and I start to hear noises which I am assuming is cavitation although the revs don't increase. I also cant get it close to porpoising.

At 40km/h my son tells me the cav plate is under water and at 50 its above water but without seeing it myself its difficult to know whats going on.

The cav plate is almost level with the keel at the moment with the motor on its lowest hole.

All in all very confusing, guess I will have to wait for the wind and rain to bugger off before I can start to make some sense out of it.

fish hunter have you read the thread on the v rod forum about engine heights yours does look a bit low to me

I have read but cant apply it till I get a competent person to go out with me. I am also getting strange things happen as I trim out which I suspect will get worse as I lift the motor.

have you given the motor leg a heave backwards to see if it is spongey hydraulics? (like air in the system)

get someone else to take photos if they can't drive the boat . but what about the people that fitted the motor, getting the engine height right should be part of fitting the motor . the first thing to do is get the height right then worry about props and other things

I have heaved on it and its rock solid.

I fitted the motor and I am not worrying about the prop at the moment

Hi All
When i replaced my outboard i went through the same thing.
In the end i placed different coloured electrical tage on the fins and got my mate to take photos. I had the motor lifted one hole and coudn't beleive the difference it made

When I was setting up mine I had the same prob of not being able to see where the cav plate was at diff speeds cause my wife is mostly the deckie,
( I don't even trust her pushing a trolly at the shops :P)

so I had her video itand we could stop and look at the vid after we did runs at diff speeds and you can hear the rpms with the camera right next to the engine.

I ended up with engine at the highest it will go, ( I think it was originally set up for sking/towing) .

with this wind and rain atm , does make it hard to get out to do anything, it's just a matter of time till either I or the kids SNAP ! good luck n cheers
