what do you call the tapered screw shaft that a polishing wheel spins onto?
I want one to fit into a 1/2" electric drill to spin a 4 " polishing wheel, but its hard to buy one when you don't know what the thing is called....................

I suggest you ask the person behind the counter for a " tapered screw shaft junket pumper" not sure the reaction , but please let us know the result.
Ok sorry I havent got a clue what its called, I was lucky enough to buy one sitting on the shelf . But I am sure someone on here will know it's real name.

I do not think you can buy one to fit a drill but you can buy one that will fit a sander /polisher and then make a adapter to fit your drill . If your on south side colins tools at cannon hill will have one . As for there name i think there called a buffing spindle .

tapered arbor?
Use a normal grinding stone arbour and it won't poke out so far and will allow you more angle on your workpiece without arbour touching work or fingers.

ended up getting what I needed at bunnings
they didn't have the tapered version for a pistol drill, but they did have a different set specifically designed for pistol drills
