From the Courier Mail web site today at least they are sarting to spend the money and as it says the guys and gals in the smaller boats will be able to access them.

Sites revealed for artificial reefs - west of Peel Island and east of Coochiemudlo

From: AAP
October 03, 2010 2:02PM THE locations of Moreton Bay's final two artificial reefs for anglers have been decided.
Six artificial reefs are being sunk around Moreton Bay to accommodate fishing areas lost to the newly-implemented Green Zones.
The state government on Sunday announced the final two locations for the six reefs - west of Peel Island and to the east of Coochiemudlo Island.
The Peel Island site covers about 50 hectares, and the Coochiemudlo site 15 hectares.
Acting Premier Paul Lucas said the reefs would be made up of large concrete reef balls, similar in shape to practice golf balls.
``These two sites are well within the reach of 'mum and dad' fishers in small boats, with at least 10 public boat ramps located within 10km of each site,'' he said.
``With the creation of these artificial reefs, we're ensuring that Moreton Bay remains a great place to wet a line, while still protecting the unique natural values of the marine park.
Sustainability Minister Kate Jones said the two new reefs were in addition to the recently completed Harry Atkinson Reef east of St Helena Island.
``Work is also underway on the design and construction of a further three reefs in offshore waters off Bribie Island, Moreton Island and South Stradbroke Island,'' she said.
``These final two sites ensure a good balance across the six artificial reefs to provide a range of new fishing experiences for offshore game fishers, spear fishers and inshore anglers, from the Gold Coast to Bribie Island.''
The six reefs, which will all be completed by mid-2011, will fulfill a $2 million election commitment from the Bligh government.

Good news indeed ...... those reef balls work pretty well

Reef balls work well in specific areas with minimal tidal flow.

More info here from a few months ago.

which in effect means that what the Govt released as a press statement on Sunday was very old news. More Bligh spin... that's all it was.

QUESTION ON NOTICE
No. 1583
asked on Tuesday, 31 August 2010
DR ROBINSON ASKED THE MINISTER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABILITY (MS JONES)—
QUESTION:
With reference to the artificial reef program for Moreton Bay, will the Minister provide for each reef (listed separately) what is planned in terms of (a) the material types and quantities (tonnes) and (b) the anticipated size of each reef (in square metres)?
ANSWER:
The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) will create the six artificial reefs in Moreton Bay Marine Park.
Harry Atkinson artificial reef consists of a 96 tonne wreck (Tiwi Pearl), 150m³ of quarry rock and approximately 450 tonnes of concrete pipes.
Three other artificial reef sites which have been announced (Wild Banks, North Moreton and South Stradbroke) are expected to be completed soon.
The Member can be kept informed of the dimensions of these reefs when they are completed.
The locations of the reefs and the materials selected are being determined by detailed input from the expert Artificial Reef Working Group. The Working Group consists largely of recreational fishing stakeholders including Sunfish, the Queensland Game Fishing Association, ECOFishers and the Australian Underwater Federation Queensland. The Australian Marine Conservation Society and the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation are also represented on the Working Group.
DERM will continue to consult with the Artificial Reef Working Group as further work is undertaken on these artificial reefs.

The press release in todays Courier Mail ( read Green Mail ) gets a speil from Lucas, Evan Jones and Mark Robinson. With the crux of the story being the 2 close to shore artri's, one would have expected some form of recognition be bestowed upon those that not only proposed this but fought for it. >:(

Typical Green Mail.................:-?

Phil, its a great outcome and some of us know how hard it was pushed. I* hate the fact that Anna is going to use it as a platform to justify her fisho friendly credentials

The currents west of Peel can be pretty savage. I'm not sure how the reef balls will go there

She has to put them in because the rest of the bay will be green zones they will be the only place you can fish ,i can see it now we provided you with arty reefs to fish on now go away

Labor double-crossing fishers with artificial reef plan

The Bligh government's Moreton Bay artificial reef program has not only stalled, with only one of six promised reefs completed to date, but questions asked in Parliament have raised doubts about whether the government will stick to its commitment to boaties and fishers.

LNP Member for Cleveland Mark Robinson said if the Bligh government substituted some of the specifically built reef structures with pylons from the Hornibrook Bridge, it should not pocket the difference.

"If the government sneakily substitutes some of the high quality reef structures, such as reef balls, with less suitable bridge pylons, ripping tens of thousands of dollars out of the program, this represents the greatest breach of trust with boaties and fishers since the Green zones were announced," Dr Robinson said.

"The six artificial reefs costing $2 million was the compensation package to Moreton Bay boaties and fishers for Labor’s fishing closures. So to deliberately under-compensate fishers would be a double-travesty and one that fishermen will be very angry about.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Glen Elmes called on Labor to come clean and end the uncertainty surrounding the artificial reef program.

"Minister Kate Jones needs to come out from under her cone of silence, confirm publicly that the $2 million will be spent in full, and get this project back on track," Mr Elmes said.

Dr Robinson said if the Hornibrook pylons were used, Labor should use the savings to build two more artificial reefs - one near Redcliffe and another perhaps outside the Bay.

“A composite approach that combines the specific structures and pylons could produce up to eight reefs in total.

"So rather than short-changing boaties and fishers, it would create additional recreational fishing areas for a similar cost,” Dr Robinson said.

asked on Wednesday, 1 September 2010
DR ROBINSON ASKED THE MINISTER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABILITY (MS JONES)—
QUESTION:
With respect to reports that concrete pylons from the old Hornibrook Highway bridge are being used to construct artificial reefs in the Moreton Bay Marine Park, will the Minister (a) confirm what work has been done to date, (b) provide a list of all types of material and quantities (tons) used in each reef, (c) confirm whether lime or any other agent that might leach into the Bay was present in the materials used and (d) list what steps have been taken by the government to prevent any leaching?
ANSWER:
No concrete piles have been used as artificial reef material to date in the project, including material from the Hornibrook Bridge.

Tim,

did you and Chris get any input into what and where?

On the face of it it looks to be a good result.. but will be happier when its actually done.

Lucky Phill is the big mover on this one. He's been attending the meetings and pushing the barrow, and might I say he's been doing a bang up job!

Cheers,

We were allowed one person to attend the group and Phill was the perfect choice with his knowledge. We have worked as a group on moving things forward and there has been some great collaboration particularly on the inshore reefs, between ECOfishers and Sunfish and we got a great result.

The approach we have taken to this is to create a blueprint for arti reefs all across QLD. From deep to shallow from fast to slow currents. This will allow for faster deployment at a reduced administrative cost. We are hoping that this will eventually be the case.
