Was talking to a guy today about small outboards and in particular Mariner.

He mentioned that Mariner have a 15 hp at different prices according to whether it is a mariner Mariner "Jap" or Mariner "US".

Was chatting about boats in particular at the time and never went back to the motor before leaving.

Significant difference in price and I assume one is made of Japanese components and the other American.

My question is how can you tell the difference. Is it marked inside the motor cowl or only mentioned in the operating manual or ?????????

Pardon my ignorance on this matter but outboard technical issues is definately not my go.

Cheers and thanks for any help.

Pete

G'day

In the smaller Mercs and Mariners, some are true US motors, that have the gears on the tiller grip - where the throttle is, and a better shallow water drive setup.

The Jap ones are tohatsu, gears are not all in one with the throttle, and the shallow water drive is a different setup.

The US version should be 262cc, and is a very good little engine ( I have it's brother, a US 9.9 merc. Very smooth for what it is comopared to the tohatsu.
