Hi

This is my first post so please go easy on me http://forums.iboats.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I have a 1992 Wellcraft 20sx Excel with a 4.3 Volvo Penta of similar year and a Volvo Penta outdrive with SP CD Trim written on it, and from what i've read its a 290?.

Water has found it's way into the engine via the exhaust manifolds so I am looking at options to get the boat back on the water.

I've tried to search the net and forum for options and so far I've come up with a few options:

1/ Source a replacement chev 4.3 marine long block and exhaust manifolds + elbows and then bolt all my existing parts on.

2/ Source a whole new extended mercruiser setup and drop it in.

So my questions are.... Will my existing parts bolt directly onto a new long motor? And will it connect to the outdrive?

Same goes if I get one of the extended engines I see listed on ebay & engine shops. All say they can be retrofitted back to pre 1996 drives.

I'll find out more info about the engine in a few hours and update this post.

What state / town are you in ?

Give these blokes a call / email to get a baseline of costs of different block, long and short block motors and heads etc.. Make sure with all quotes you get you are clear of what you are getting in the box as some include gasket kits , water pumps , manifolds etc and other don't. See if the motors are bench run and what restrictions are on who installs them for warranty etc. Don't assume anything and ask all the questions as buying a half motor may seem cheaper but a mechanic at your end has to spend time putting it together and then if there is a failure there is a arguement as to what happened and who is to blame.

They will know about possible updates and the complete costs of doing them be it a 2 barrel carby to a 4 barrel or a ne well housing and motor format .

I won't recommend a business but the below over the years have give me lots of good advice on older motor setups and that avice has saved me a lot of grief and time

Don't know these blokes ( in QLD) - good description of what is in their package and what rebuilt, long , short etc means.

Some people do a fully dressed motor which included everything right down to alternators , belts etc as a bolt in and bolt out.

Depending on the real damage to your own motor and the condition it was in it may be worth a rebuild

Do a search on here as many people have asked the same question on inboard replacements / ugrades.

Edit - just looked up aUSA site and seems there was a change to the GM motors in 1996 and a slght power / effeciency update.

Many thanks steeler and cormorant for the replies.

Cormorant I am in Brisbane, QLD. I had taken the boat to get serviced and thus found all the damage, however the mechanic wasn't that easy to talk to about my options. This was about a year ago, and I have spent the last year watching ebay for any deals and trying to do research on what to do next.

I'll look over all those links and start talking to some of them. I'm going to go jump in the boat now and get exact engine and outdrive specs.
