I have a 20+ year old Johnson 30 HP motor and the starter motor does not engage. It spins but does not raise to spin the 'flywheel'. It does occasionally raise a few mm but not enough. Battery is still on charge as I type and has 13.6 V charge.

Like glass out here at Saunders Beach Townsville. Need to wet a line.

Any help much appreciated.

Is there lubrication on the shaft to allow the thrust gear to spin up. Any corrosion could be a problem. Lubrication would also have the be a thin type and not a heavy grease, I would suspect.
Also check for a good earth (-ve) connection between the battery and the motor.

You could try with a jumper cable from the +ve terminal of the battery to the +ve of the starter motor and see if there is a change in starter motor speed.

Hope these help

Cheers
Chris

11.4 V at starter motor when cranking, with voltmeter on + of starter and earthed on motor. The thrust gear still raises a few mm but not engages. :-?

Thanks Chris
